Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.
High
VVT-i oil supply hose rupture (pre-2009 builds)
2GR-FE engines built up to around April 2008 use a rubber-section VVT-i oil supply hose that perishes and can split, draining engine oil in as little as 30 seconds and risking catastrophic engine damage. Toyota superseded it with a solid metal line on late-2008/2009-onward engines.
Fix: Replace preventively with the updated full-metal line; if it still has the original rubber-section hose, do it now regardless of km. Confirm the yellow-tag/updated part is fitted before purchase.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50
High
VVT-i oil supply hose rupture (early 2GR-FE)
Built within the affected 2007-2008 window, TRD Aurions can carry the same perishable rubber VVT-i oil hose that splits and drains oil in seconds.
Fix: Replace with the updated full-metal line preventively; confirm it has been done before buying.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50
High
Oil cooler / VVT-i oil line failure
Rubber section of the VVT-i oil supply line bursts causing rapid total oil loss. Engine failure if not noticed immediately. Affects 2GR-FE across Camry, Aurion, RAV4, Kluger.
Fix: Replace with updated full-steel braided line (Toyota TSB available). Cheap insurance - do this preventively if not done already.
Listed for: Toyota Camry XV40
High
VVT-i oil feed line leak
Like the 2GR-FE in many Toyotas, the rubber section of the VVT-i oil supply line can perish and develop a pinhole leak, dumping oil - in the worst case onto hot exhaust, a documented fire risk.
Fix: Replace the original part-rubber line with the updated full-metal line as a preventive fix.
Listed for: Toyota Tarago XR50
Medium
Water pump seepage
The 2GR-FE water pump can weep coolant from the weep hole/seal with age and km, eventually dripping under the car.
Fix: Replace the water pump (and check thermostat/hoses while in there); not urgent until it leaks consistently.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50 · Toyota Kluger XU50
Medium
U660E cold-start shift flare and torque-converter shudder
The six-speed U660E auto commonly flares (sharp RPM rise) on the 3-4 upshift in the first ~10 minutes after a cold start, and develops a lock-up shudder at light/moderate throttle around 60-90km/h. Usually caused by deteriorated/incorrect fluid and valve-body/lock-up solenoid wear; Toyota released a revised valve body to address it.
Fix: Fresh genuine Toyota WS fluid and a drain/fill; revised valve body or lock-up solenoid if it persists. Avoid examples that have never had a transmission service.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50
Medium
Supercharger and intercooler ancillaries
The Eaton TVS supercharger needs its own oil and a healthy supercharger/intercooler belt, pulley, idler and coupler; neglected examples can whine, leak or shed belts. TRD-specific parts are scarce now that TRD Australia is long gone.
Fix: Verify supercharger oil and belt service history; source TRD/Eaton parts through specialists. Avoid modified/over-boosted examples.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50
Medium
Severe torque steer and front-end wear
400Nm through the front wheels produces strong torque steer and chews front tyres, CV joints and bushes faster than the standard Aurion, particularly if driven hard.
Fix: Quality tyres and alignment; inspect CVs, ball joints and bushes; sympathetic throttle use.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50
Medium
High-km oil consumption
Higher-mileage 2GR-FE V6s can start consuming oil between services. Usually a monitoring/top-up issue rather than catastrophic, but worth checking on a high-km example.
Fix: Check oil level regularly; investigate PCV/valve-stem seals; ring/valve work only if consumption is severe.
Listed for: Toyota Kluger XU50
Medium
Idler pulley seizure / A/C squeal
The 3.5L's accessory idler pulley bearing wears and squeals (often noticeably with the A/C running); a seizing pulley can throw the belt and, if neglected, has been linked to under-bonnet fires.
Fix: Replace the idler pulley and drive belt at the first squeal; inspect at service.
Listed for: Toyota Tarago XR50
Low
Torque steer / front tyre wear
200kW through the front wheels produces pronounced torque steer under hard acceleration and accelerates front tyre wear, especially on the firmer-suspension Sportivo/SX6 grades. Not a fault.
Fix: Quality tyres, sensible throttle from standstill; regular rotation and alignment.
Listed for: Toyota Aurion XV40 / XV50
Low
Water pump weep
Water pump bearing wears.
Fix: Water pump replacement during major service.
Listed for: Toyota Camry XV40
Low
Throttle body carbon
Throttle body builds up carbon causing rough idle.
Fix: Manual clean with throttle body cleaner. Easy DIY.
Listed for: Toyota Camry XV40
Low
VVT-i oil line / front cover and cam-cover leaks
XU50 cars use the updated all-metal VVT-i oil line (Toyota switched away from the failure-prone rubber line in 2010), so the dramatic rubber-line rupture is not the XU50 risk it was on older V6s - but front timing-cover and cam-cover gasket seepage still appears at higher km.
Fix: Reseal front cover / cam covers as needed; the metal VVT-i line rarely needs attention.
Listed for: Toyota Kluger XU50
Low
Cam chain tensioner rattle on cold start
A brief rattle on cold start can indicate a tired cam chain tensioner.
Fix: Replace the tensioner; keep to clean oil and correct service intervals.
Listed for: Toyota Kluger XU50
Low
Cold-start VVT-i rattle
A brief top-end rattle at cold start, as if there's no oil pressure, from the VVT-i cam phasers/oil control - usually harmless but worth monitoring with clean oil and correct service intervals.
Fix: Use correct-grade oil and keep services up; in persistent cases the cam timing gear/phaser is investigated.
Listed for: Toyota Tarago XR50
