Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Low-pressure fuel pump failure (Denso recall VGG17/VGG05)
Affected XU50 Klugers built roughly July 2017 to December 2019 can have a faulty Denso low-pressure fuel pump impeller that stops the pump, causing the engine to run rough, stall and possibly not restart - a safety risk. Covered by Toyota recall campaigns VGG17 (Apr 2020) and VGG05 (Nov 2020).
Fix: Confirm the fuel-pump recall has been completed against the VIN; if not, have Toyota replace the pump free under the campaign.
Any (recall) · ~$0 if recall done (else ~$500-1200)
Listed for: Toyota Kluger XU50
Medium
Water pump seepage at higher km
As with the 2GR-FE, the V6 water pump can weep and eventually fail at higher km.
Fix: Replace the water pump and coolant preventively; watch the weep hole.
From 120k+ km · ~$500-1200

Second-row seat recliner / front seat-back frame recalls
Campaign XGG05 (Jun 2022) covered 2021 cars whose front seat-back frames were not made to the minimum radius criteria, and a later second-row recliner-mechanism action (~34,000 cars) addressed a recliner that may not fully engage, allowing the seatback to move unexpectedly - a crash-safety concern.
Fix: Run the VIN through Toyota's recall checker and confirm the seat-frame and recliner campaigns were completed.

Low
8-speed auto harshness if fluid neglected
The UA80 8-speed is reliable but towing or high-km cars benefit from a fluid service despite the 'fill-for-life' label; neglected fluid can cause harsher shifts.
Fix: Periodic transmission fluid service for towing/high-km use.
From 150k+ km · ~$300-600 (fluid service)

Front bumper cover detachment (recall YGG74)
Recall campaign YGG74 (Nov 2023) covers 2021-23 XU70 Kluger and Kluger Hybrid fitted with a resin front lower bumper cover whose mounting tabs could detach after a minor impact, with a risk the cover comes loose on the road.
Fix: Confirm the YGG74 recall has been completed at a Toyota dealer; rectification is free.

Direct/port (D-4S) intake and oil-consumption housekeeping
The 2GR-FKS is robust, but the broader 2GR family is known for some oil consumption and, on pure-DI use, intake-valve carbon. The D-4S dual-injection on this engine washes the valves and largely avoids the carbon issue, but high-km cars should be checked for oil use.
Fix: Check oil level and for consumption on inspection; keep to clean oil and 15,000km/12-month intervals; intake clean only if symptomatic.
From 120k+ km · ~$200-1500
Listed for: Toyota Kluger XU70
