Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Timing chain tensioner failure
Boss V8 has dual timing chains with hydraulic tensioners. Tensioners can fail on high-km neglected examples causing chain skip and bent valves.
Fix: Full chain kit at major service. Listen for rattle on cold start at pre-purchase. Use quality oil at proper intervals.
From 150-250k km · ~$3000-6000
Listed for: Ford Falcon BA / BF
High
BTR 4-speed auto failure
Same BTR issues as the Barra — handles V8 torque worse than the 6-speed ZF.
Fix: ZF 6-speed conversion or BTR rebuild. Pre-purchase, harsh shifts = walk away or negotiate hard.
From 100-180k km · ~$2500-5000
Listed for: Ford Falcon BA / BF
Medium
Oil consumption (Mk II onward)
BA Mk II onwards developed reputation for oil consumption — 1L per 2000-4000km. Less common than the Camry 2AZ-FE issue but still notable.
Fix: Catch can helps reduce blowby. Check oil weekly on examples with this history.
From 100k+ km · ~$0-100/oil
Listed for: Ford Falcon BA / BF
Medium
Cam phaser rattle and timing-chain wear (3-valve)
The 3-valve 5.4 (BA/BF) suffers cam phaser rattle on cold start and timing-chain/guide wear, with a distinctive top-end noise.
Fix: Replace phasers, chains, guides and tensioners; use correct oil and change on time.
From 120k+ km · ~$1500-4000
Listed for: Ford Falcon Ute BA-FG
Medium
Spark plug seizing / thread blow-out (3-valve)
The modular 3-valve head is notorious for spark plugs seizing or stripping the alloy threads on removal, sometimes requiring thread inserts.
Fix: Careful removal technique, anti-seize, and thread repair (Time-Sert) if damaged.
Any (at plug change) · ~$300-1500
Listed for: Ford Falcon Ute BA-FG
Low
Cam followers / lifters tick
Hydraulic lifters tick on cold start, sometimes persistent. More common on neglected oil change schedule.
Fix: Quality oil at proper intervals. Lifter replacement if persistent (head off job).
From 150k+ km · ~$1500-3000
Listed for: Ford Falcon BA / BF
Low
Fuel thirst and harder-worked driveline
Real-world 14-18+ L/100km and extra torque load on the diff/bushes; not a fault but a cost.
Fix: Accept fuel cost; keep an eye on diff bushes (see shared problems).
Any · Running cost
Listed for: Ford Falcon Ute BA-FG
