Known problems8
Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.
High
DSG (DQ500) mechatronic / clutch faults
The 7-speed wet-clutch DQ500 is far tougher than the small-car dry DQ200, but the mechatronic unit can still fail - jerky shifts, limp mode, loss of odd/even gears and clutch-position sensor codes (e.g. P173500/P173600), worsened by skipped fluid changes.
Fix: Strict DSG oil/filter service (every ~60,000-80,000km); mechatronic or clutch-pack replacement when faulty. Insist on DSG service records.
Listed for: Volkswagen Transporter T6
Medium
EA189 Dieselgate emissions defeat-device recall (2013-2015)
Early 110TDIs used the EA189 engine fitted with emissions defeat-device software that breached ADR 79. VW ran a mandatory Australian recall (software, plus a flow transformer on 1.6 TDI) to bring them into compliance. Some owners report post-fix EGR and economy complaints.
Fix: Confirm the emissions recall was completed via VIN check; budget for EGR cleaning/replacement if symptoms appear.
Listed for: Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Medium
DPF clogging / regeneration issues
Diesel particulate filter clogs on short, cold, urban-only trips that prevent regeneration, triggering warnings and limp mode.
Fix: Regular highway runs to complete regens; forced regen or DPF clean/replace if blocked.
Listed for: Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Medium
EGR valve / cooler and intake soot
EGR valve sticking and intake-manifold soot are the usual common-rail diesel ancillaries, causing rough running and limp mode.
Fix: EGR clean or replacement and intake clean by a diesel specialist.
Listed for: Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Medium
DPF clogging on short city/stop-start duty
Used for short courier hops the DPF never gets hot enough to regenerate, clogging and triggering warning lights, limp mode and forced/failed regens. The most common T6 ownership complaint.
Fix: Regular 20+ minute highway runs to complete regens; DPF clean or forced regen; correct VW long-life oil. Avoid pure stop-start use.
Listed for: Volkswagen Transporter T6
Medium
EGR valve / cooler faults
EGR valve sticking and EGR cooler clogging with soot cause rough running, fault codes and increased DPF loading.
Fix: EGR clean or replacement; intake decarbon. Highway running reduces soot load.
Listed for: Volkswagen Transporter T6
Medium
Timing belt and water pump (scheduled)
The EA288 2.0 TDI is belt-driven; a neglected belt or water pump risks catastrophic interference-engine damage if it lets go.
Fix: Replace belt, tensioner and water pump on schedule - confirm it's been done before buying a higher-km example.
Listed for: Volkswagen Transporter T6
Medium
DPF / EGR emissions issues
Same DPF clogging and EGR soot/sticking as the rest of the range, aggravated by short stop-start running.
Fix: Regular highway runs, correct oil, EGR/DPF clean as needed.
Listed for: Volkswagen Transporter T6
