Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.
High
Lineartronic CVT judder / shudder and failure
The torque-converter CVT can shudder or judder at low speed as the lock-up engages, and some cars develop surging or hesitant take-up. Most low-speed judder is cured by a Subaru TSB software reflash. Outright CVT failure is uncommon but very expensive when it happens, especially on neglected cars.
Fix: Apply the Subaru reflash for judder; insist on CVT fluid changes (every ~60,000km despite 'sealed' claims); budget for a unit if history is unknown.
Listed for: Subaru Forester SJ
Medium
Oil consumption and oil leaks (FB engine)
FB-series boxers can use oil and develop leaks from the timing cover, cam carriers and head gaskets, with oil sometimes burning onto the exhaust. Consumption eased on 2015-on builds but some still drink between services.
Fix: Monitor oil between services; reseal covers/cam carriers as needed; check level and for smoke pre-purchase.
Listed for: Subaru Forester SJ
Medium
Engine oil consumption (oil-control ring wear)
A subset of FB25 engines burn oil through premature wear of the oil-control piston rings, with low oil-light or smoke between services. Affects roughly a small percentage of engines but is well documented and the subject of a Subaru TSB; severe cases needed updated rings or a short block.
Fix: Track oil level between services; if consumption is high, have the dealer run an oil-consumption test and replace rings/short block under the relevant TSB or goodwill. Use the correct 0W-20 oil and service on time.

Medium
Lineartronic CVT shudder / low-speed bump / engagement delay
Owners report a shudder under light load, a 'bump' or jolt at idle in Drive once the CVT is warm (Subaru TSB for 2015-17 2.5i), and a 1-4 second delay shifting reverse to drive. Most are nuisance-level and resolved by a TCM reflash and fresh CVT fluid; a minority escalate to valve body or full transmission replacement.
Fix: Apply the latest TCM reflash and a CVT fluid service; confirm any Subaru extended CVT warranty coverage. Test-drive specifically for shudder and reverse-to-drive delay before buying.

Medium
FB25 oil consumption (early build)
Some FB25 engines, mainly earlier-build cars, consume oil between services (a known issue that triggered an overseas class action on the related 2013-2014 cars). Most BS examples are improved over the launch engines, but a minority still use oil.
Fix: Monitor oil level between services; an oil-consumption test establishes severity. Short-block replacement only in extreme cases - check service history for top-ups.
Listed for: Subaru Outback BS
Medium
Lineartronic CVT hesitation / fluid service
The CVT can show slow/jerky response, which Subaru addressed with a fluid change and ECU reflash. The BS unit is much better than the 2010-2014 cars, but neglected fluid shortens its life and replacement is expensive.
Fix: Change the CVT fluid (Subaru did not always specify it, but specialists recommend ~60-100k km); apply any TCU reflash; avoid heavy towing.
Listed for: Subaru Outback BS
Low
Front lower control arm bush wear
The front lower control arm bushes degrade and cause clunking over bumps and alignment drift - a common SJ niggle.
Fix: Replace the bushes or the control arms; wheel alignment afterward.
Listed for: Subaru Forester SJ
Low
Intake valve carbon build-up
Carbon accumulates on intake valves and ports over time, causing rough idle or a slight loss of smoothness at high km.
Fix: Induction/intake clean as needed; quality fuel and regular oil changes slow it.
Listed for: Subaru Liberty 6th gen
Low
Boxer oil leaks / head gasket weeping
Like most Subaru boxers, the FB25 can weep oil from cam carrier/valve cover gaskets and, less often, head gaskets at higher km.
Fix: Reseal cam carriers/valve covers; head gasket work if confirmed - inspect for oil weep pre-purchase.
Listed for: Subaru Outback BS
