Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Piston slap / high oil consumption (early Gen III)
Early LS1 Gen III engines are known for piston slap (a cold-start rattle from excess piston-to-bore clearance) and high oil consumption; Holden repaired or replaced hundreds under warranty, citing roughly 2% of V8s. Severe cases burn significant oil.
Fix: Monitor oil consumption and cold-start noise pre-purchase; rebuild or replace pistons/short motor in bad cases. Many engines are fine - check history.
Any (early build) · ~$1500-8000
Listed for: Holden Commodore VT / VX
High
4L60E transmission failure
4L60E behind the LS1 is constantly stressed — torque converter shudder, slipping, then failure.
Fix: Fresh fluid every 50-60k mandatory. Rebuild with upgraded valve body and clutches. Many convert to T56 manual or upgrade to 4L65E.
From 120-200k km · ~$2000-4500
Listed for: Holden Commodore VY / VZ
High
Oil consumption / low-oil bearing damage
The relatively small sump combined with normal-to-high oil consumption on long service intervals can drop oil pressure, leading to spun bearings or starved lifters if the owner does not top up. Many high-km cars use oil between services.
Fix: Check oil level frequently, shorten service intervals, use correct grade. Verify compression and listen for bottom-end knock before buying.
Any · ~$5000-12000 (if bearings/engine damaged)
Listed for: Holden Monaro V2 / VZ
Medium
Oil leaks (rear main / valley / cover)
Rear main seal, valley-cover and front-cover leaks appear with age and km on the Gen III.
Fix: Reseal affected areas; valley plate gasket is a known leak point.
From 150k+ km · ~$300-1500
Listed for: Holden Commodore VT / VX
Medium
T-56 manual / clutch wear (worked or modified)
The T-56 six-speed and clutch wear when the car has been driven hard or modified, with synchro and bearing noise or slip.
Fix: Clutch and/or gearbox rebuild; inspect for abuse on modified examples.
From 120k+ km · ~$800-3000
Listed for: Holden Commodore VT / VX
Medium
Oil consumption (high km)
Some LS1s develop oil consumption above 200k km, particularly modified or hard-driven examples.
Fix: Catch can helps. Monitor and top up between services.
From 200k+ km · ~$0-100/oil
Listed for: Holden Commodore VY / VZ
Medium
Differential whine and wear
Live rear axle diffs develop whine due to bearing wear, especially on launched/tuned examples.
Fix: Diff rebuild. Some convert to upgraded ratio or 9-inch.
From 150k+ km · ~$1500-3000

Piston slap / cold-start rattle (early LS1)
Early Gen III LS1s used a pressed gudgeon pin that let the piston rock in the bore until it warmed, giving a distinctive cold-start rattle. Holden later Teflon-coated pistons and moved to a floating pin which largely cured it on later builds. A persistent rattle that does not clear with warmth, combined with oil use, points to worn pistons.
Fix: Minor noise is often lived with; severe cases need new pistons/short motor. Inspect/listen on cold start pre-purchase and check service history for any rebuild.
Any (worse on 2001-2002 builds) · ~$3000-8000 (rebuild if severe)
Listed for: Holden Monaro V2 / VZ
Medium
Valve lifter tick / sticking lifter
Hydraulic lifters can stick or wear, giving a light tapping at idle, especially when cold. Left unchecked a collapsed lifter can damage a cam lobe.
Fix: Lifter (and where needed camshaft) replacement; fresh oil and correct grade help.
From 120k+ km · ~$1500-3500
Listed for: Holden Monaro V2 / VZ
Medium
Cold-start piston slap (early blocks)
Early Gen III LS1 blocks (notably pre-VY Series II, roughly before mid-2003) suffer piston-to-bore clearance noise - a diesel-like rattle on cold start that quiets as it warms. Holden added a 'piston slap' ignition table to mask it. Usually cosmetic/noise, but pronounced cases indicate bore/piston wear.
Fix: Verify it disappears when warm and that oil consumption is acceptable. Later (revised piston) blocks are largely free of it. Severe cases need a short-motor rebuild.
Any (design trait) · ~$0-8000 (monitor vs rebuild)
Listed for: Holden Ute VU / VY / VZ
Medium
Oil consumption / lifter tick
Valve-stem seals and rings wear at higher km causing oil use and exhaust haze; hydraulic lifters can tick, especially on neglected oil-change intervals.
Fix: Keep to fresh oil; replace valve seals if smoking; lifter/cam replacement if persistent tick. Check oil level habitually.
From 150k+ km · ~$500-2500
Listed for: Holden Ute VU / VY / VZ
Medium
Modified / abused engine risk
V8 utes attract performance mods and hard use - dodgy tunes, worn clutches and tired diffs are common on SS examples.
Fix: Pre-purchase inspection, scan for tune, check service history and clutch/diff condition; favour stock, documented cars.
Any · Varies
Listed for: Holden Ute VU / VY / VZ
Low
Rear main seal weep
Rear main seal can weep oil over time.
Fix: Reseal during clutch or torque converter service to save labour.
From 150k+ km · ~$400-800
Listed for: Holden Commodore VY / VZ
