Known problems7

Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
CVT shudder / judder and long-term failure risk
The Jatco-style stepped CVT can shudder, judder or pulse at low speed and on take-up as the lock-up engages, and degraded/overheated fluid causes belt slip. It is smooth and well-behaved when healthy, but a CVT remains the costliest thing to go wrong on the petrol Outlander and is shared with the X-Trail's troublesome Nissan CVT lineage. Reduced-power warnings have also been reported.
Fix: Demand CVT fluid-change history (around every 60,000km despite 'sealed' claims); a software recalibration addresses some judder; budget for a unit on high-km cars with unknown history, and test-drive for shudder when cold and warm.
Any (shudder); 120k+ km (failure) · ~$300-1500 (fluid/diagnosis); $6000-9000 (replacement)
Listed for: Mitsubishi Outlander ZM
High
Xtronic CVT judder, whine and failure
Nissan's Jatco-built Xtronic CVT is the headline durability concern. Owners report shudder/judder on light throttle, a rising whine, hesitation or jerky take-up, and there are owner reports of outright CVT failure (one documented at around 119,000km). Neglected fluid and city/towing use accelerate wear; Nissan CVTs have a long, well-publicised litigation and failure history.
Fix: Insist on CVT fluid (NS-3) change history; have a software update/relearn done for judder; budget for a unit if records are missing. Avoid heavily towed or fluid-neglected cars.
Any (judder); 100k-150k+ km (failure) · ~$300-1500 (fluid/reflash); $6000-9000 (replacement)
Listed for: Nissan X-Trail T33
Medium
Direct-injection intake-valve carbon and EGR fouling
The PR25DD is a direct-injection engine with no port-injection wash of the intake valves, so carbon builds on the valves over time and the EGR valve can foul with soot, causing rough idle, hesitation or misfire codes. These are documented PR25DD traits across the Outlander/X-Trail/Rogue family.
Fix: Walnut-blast/intake clean and EGR clean if symptomatic; quality fuel and regular oil changes slow it.
From 80k+ km · ~$300-1200
Listed for: Mitsubishi Outlander ZM
Low
Valve lash / no hydraulic lifters (top-end ticking)
The PR25DD uses solid (mechanical) valve adjustment rather than hydraulic lifters, so valve clearances can drift and produce a top-end tick that requires a manual lash adjustment - not a typical modern-engine service item and easy to overlook.
Fix: Have valve clearances checked/adjusted if a top-end tick develops; otherwise no action needed.
From 100k+ km · ~$300-900
Listed for: Mitsubishi Outlander ZM
Low
Start-stop system glitching / battery faults
The auto stop-start system can become erratic - failing to restart smoothly, refusing to stop the engine, or throwing warnings - often traced to a tired 12V battery or sensor, a common complaint on this engine family.
Fix: Test/replace the 12V (and AGM/sub) battery; reset and update software if the fault persists.
Any · ~$200-600
Listed for: Mitsubishi Outlander ZM
Low
Direct-injection intake-valve carbon build-up
The PR25DD is direct-injection only (no port wash), so carbon can accumulate on the intake valves over time, causing rough idle, hesitation or minor misfire at higher km.
Fix: Walnut-blast/intake clean if symptomatic; quality fuel and regular oil changes slow it.
From 100k+ km · ~$300-900
Listed for: Nissan X-Trail T33
Low
Cold-start engine rattle / timing-chain tensioner noise
A brief rattle on cold start is commonly reported and usually normal, but a persistent or worsening rattle can indicate timing-chain tensioner or chain-guide wear at high km.
Fix: Confirm it clears within a second or two; investigate the chain/tensioner if the rattle persists or grows.
Any · ~$0-1500
Listed for: Nissan X-Trail T33
