Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
CVT shudder / failure if fluid neglected
The CVT is reliable when serviced on schedule with genuine Honda CVT fluid, but neglected units develop torque-converter shudder, juddering on light throttle, slipping and in the worst cases complete failure - owners have reported gearbox replacements around 90,000km costing several thousand dollars. The unit is very sensitive to the correct fluid and regular changes.
Fix: Insist on proof of CVT fluid changes; budget a genuine-fluid service if history is unknown. Avoid examples that judder or surge on test drive - replacement is the costly outcome.

Medium
CVT shudder / juddering
The CVT can develop shudder or hesitation on light throttle take-off, usually traced to degraded CVT fluid or torque-converter lock-up behaviour.
Fix: Fresh genuine Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid (drain/fill); software update if applicable. Service the CVT fluid even though Honda lists it as 'lifetime'.

Touchscreen / infotainment faults and dated software
Pre-facelift (2015-2018) cars use Honda's much-criticised capacitive touchscreen with no physical volume control, laggy software and no Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (added at the 2019 facelift). Units can freeze, reboot, lose audio or fail the touch layer entirely.
Fix: Reflash/software update or head-unit replacement; many owners fit an aftermarket unit. Prefer a 2019+ facelift car for CarPlay/Android Auto.

Electric park brake / brake-system warnings
Owners report electronic parking brake warnings and occasional failure to release or engage, often traced to sensor faults, low battery voltage in cold weather or a failing EPB actuator. Some 2016-2019 cars were subject to brake-related service campaigns.
Fix: Diagnose actuator/sensor; ensure battery is healthy. Confirm any relevant brake service campaign has been completed.

VTC actuator cold-start rattle
Honda's variable timing control (VTC) actuator can rattle for a second or two on a cold start (a 'marbles in a tin' noise) as the locking pin fails to hold with low oil pressure. Largely a noise nuisance, but a neglected one can wear chain guides.
Fix: Replace the updated VTC actuator; keep oil changes on schedule with correct-spec oil to prevent it.

Engine mount wear
Rear/lower engine mounts soften with age, allowing extra vibration and a clunk on take-off.
Fix: Replace worn mounts.

Paint / clear-coat peeling and trim defects
Documented paint defects including peeling or flaking clear coat (notably on the roof) and a rough or bubbly finish on plastic window trim on some examples in the Australian climate.
Fix: Panel respray for affected areas; inspect roof and trim closely pre-purchase, especially on solid colours.
