Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Auto transmission / radiator coolant cross-contamination
The 7-speed auto, like the rest of the range, can suffer coolant/ATF cross-contamination from a radiator cooler failure - very costly on this gearbox.
Fix: Fit/verify an external trans cooler; inspect fluid pre-purchase; rebuild/replace if contaminated.
Any (cooler in radiator) · ~$3500-8000
Listed for: Nissan Pathfinder R51
Medium
EGR cooler failures
EGR cooler internal failures on the V9X are documented.
Fix: EGR cooler replacement. Delete kits exist but legal status varies.
From 100k+ km · ~$1000-2000
Listed for: Nissan Navara D40

Specialist scarcity
V9X is shared with Renault Master vans but few Australian specialists work on it regularly.
Fix: Find a Renault-experienced diesel specialist before committing to the V6.

Medium
Injector and turbo wear (high repair cost)
The V9X common-rail injectors and turbo are durable but expensive; faults cause rough running, smoke, hard starting or boost issues, and parts/labour are dearer than the four-cylinder.
Fix: Diesel-specialist injector test/replacement and turbo service; use quality fuel and filtration.
From 150k+ km · ~$2000-5000
Listed for: Nissan Pathfinder R51
Medium
EGR / intake soot and emissions faults
EGR and intake carbon build-up cause rough running and limp mode; emissions sensors/valves are a common fault source on this engine.
Fix: EGR/intake clean, replace faulty sensors/valves; regular highway running.
From 120k+ km · ~$600-2000
Listed for: Nissan Pathfinder R51
