Civic 10th gen (FC/FK) inspection checklist

highTakata airbag (early build / inflator checks)

Look for: As with most cars of this era, verify the vehicle is clear of any outstanding Takata or other airbag/inflator recall actions via VIN before purchase.

If you find it: Check the VIN against Honda Australia and the official recall register; have any outstanding recall completed free of charge.

mediumAir-conditioning condenser / compressor failure (R-1234yf)

Look for: The 10th-gen Civic's switch to R-1234yf refrigerant runs higher system pressures and the condenser, compressor and lines are prone to premature failure across the whole range, with loss of cold air a common complaint.

If you find it: Replace the failed condenser/compressor (Honda issued overseas warranty extensions - TSB 19-091 for condensers, later compressor shaft-seal coverage; ask a Honda dealer if any goodwill applies in Australia).

mediumCVT 'lifetime fluid' degradation

Look for: Honda markets the CVT fluid as lifetime, but on the mainstream 1.8 and 1.5T cars degraded fluid is the usual cause of shudder, hesitation and long-term wear.

If you find it: Drain-and-fill with genuine HCF-2 every ~60,000-80,000km regardless of the 'lifetime' label.

1.5L VTEC Turbo petrol (VTi-L / RS / VTi-LX)

highOil dilution / fuel-in-oil

Look for: The L15B7's very efficient cooling means it can be slow to reach operating temperature, so unburnt fuel washes past the rings into the sump on short or cold runs. Owners see the oil level rise above full and a fuel smell in the oil; in extreme/neglected cases this thins the oil and risks bearing wear. The subject of overseas class actions and a known concern on AU cars used mostly for short urban trips.

If you find it: Check oil level/smell at every service; shorten oil-change interval (e.g. 5,000-7,500km) and do regular longer warm-up drives; apply any Honda software/calibration update for warm-up. Worst cases need oil and component checks.

mediumIntake-valve carbon build-up (direct injection)

Look for: As a direct-injection engine, fuel no longer washes the intake valves, so carbon deposits accumulate and can cause rough idle, misfires, hesitation and reduced economy - most prominent on pre-2019 1.5T engines.

If you find it: Walnut-blast or chemical intake-valve clean every ~80,000-100,000km; a catch-can helps reduce build-up.

mediumTurbo wastegate / VTC actuator rattle

Look for: A rattle at low rpm or on deceleration can come from a loose/worn turbo wastegate actuator, while the VTC actuator can rattle on cold start as on the 1.8.

If you find it: Replace the wastegate actuator or VTC actuator as diagnosed; keep oil services up to date.

mediumCVT shudder / hesitation

Look for: Same CVT family as the 1.8 - can shudder on light-throttle take-off as fluid degrades.

If you find it: Genuine HCF-2 CVT fluid service; software update if applicable. Don't trust the 'lifetime fluid' label.

1.8L i-VTEC petrol (VTi / VTi-S)

mediumCVT shudder / juddering

Look for: The CVT can develop shudder or hesitation on light throttle take-off, usually traced to degraded CVT fluid or torque-converter lock-up behaviour.

If you find it: Fresh genuine Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid (drain/fill); software update if applicable. Service the CVT fluid even though Honda lists it as 'lifetime'.

2.0L VTEC Turbo Type R (FK8)

mediumClutch wear from hard launches

Look for: The factory clutch is strong but can wear prematurely on cars that are frequently launched at high rpm or driven hard.

If you find it: Clutch replacement; inspect/test-drive for slip before buying a hard-used example.

lowInfotainment glitches / no volume knob

Look for: The Display Audio touchscreen can freeze, lag or drop Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and early cars lacked a physical volume knob (added later) - a long-standing owner gripe.

If you find it: Software/firmware update; head-unit replacement in persistent cases.

lowPremature front tyre and brake wear

Look for: Sportier RS/turbo and especially Type R cars can chew front tyres and brakes; uneven wear can point to alignment or hard use.

If you find it: Regular rotation and alignment; quality tyres and pads.

lowVTC actuator cold-start rattle

Look for: Honda's variable timing control (VTC) actuator can rattle for a second or two on a cold start (a 'marbles in a tin' noise) as the locking pin fails to hold with low oil pressure. Largely a noise nuisance, but a neglected one can wear chain guides.

If you find it: Replace the updated VTC actuator; keep oil changes on schedule with correct-spec oil to prevent it.

lowEngine mount wear

Look for: Rear/lower engine mounts soften with age, allowing extra vibration and a clunk on take-off.

If you find it: Replace worn mounts.

From 100k+ km

lowSoft paint / clear-coat issues

Look for: The FK8's paint is thin and chips easily, with reported clear-coat blistering on mirror caps and door handles.

If you find it: Paint protection film on impact zones; respray affected panels as needed. Inspect for prior stone-chip damage.

lowFront CV joint / outer joint wear

Look for: Some FK8s develop outer CV joint wear, producing a clicking noise on tight low-speed turns.

If you find it: Replace the affected CV joint/axle.
