Wrangler JK inspection checklist

2007-2018 · 14 things to check before you buy, taken from this car's known problems.

All engines

highDeath wobble (solid front axle)

Look for: Violent self-sustaining front-axle oscillation triggered by a bump above ~60km/h. The JK's solid-axle 5-link setup is prone to it; root causes are worn/loose track bar, tie-rod ends (factory AU tie rods have known play), ball joints and bolts - not the steering damper alone.

If you find it: Full front-end inspection; replace worn track bar/tie rod/ball joints, torque mounts, then wheel alignment. A damper only masks it.

mediumRoof and door seal water leaks

Look for: Soft-top and hard-top JKs are notorious for wind noise and water leaks around the door surrounds, freedom-panel seals and windscreen frame.

If you find it: Replace/adjust seals, reseal freedom-top panels; check for footwell water damage pre-purchase.

mediumElectrical gremlins (TIPM, windows, lights)

Look for: The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) and general wiring give a range of faults - random window/wiper/light behaviour, no-start, fuel-pump relay issues.

If you find it: Diagnose TIPM/relays; repair or replace the module; check chafed looms in the engine bay.

mediumCorrosion - body mounts, frame, floors

Look for: Beach and coastal JKs corrode at body mounts, frame rails, floor pans and door bottoms, especially with regular sand/salt use.

If you find it: Inspect underbody and mounts pre-purchase; wash down after beach use; favour dry-climate cars.

mediumFront axle ball joints and wheel bearings

Look for: Solid-axle ball joints and unit wheel bearings wear with km, lifts and big tyres, contributing to vague steering and death wobble.

If you find it: Replace ball joints and bearings as a set; upgraded units suited to tyre/lift size.

3.6L Pentastar V6 petrol

highEarly left-bank cylinder head failure (2012-2013)

Look for: Very early Pentastar engines suffered a left-cylinder-bank head fault causing a misfire/ticking and rough running; later castings fixed it.

If you find it: Confirm head replacement history on 2012-2013 cars; replace affected head if faulty.

Under 120k km (early build) · ~$2500-5000

mediumOil cooler / filter housing leak

Look for: The plastic oil-cooler/filter-adaptor housing on top of the engine warps and cracks, leaking oil and/or coolant - the signature Pentastar failure.

If you find it: Replace the housing (aluminium aftermarket units available); don't over-tighten the oil cap.

From 120k+ km (often 150k-200k) · ~$600-1400

2.8L CRD turbo diesel

highTurbo and boost-hose failure

Look for: The turbo wears or carbons up, and the factory boost hoses (pre-2009 especially) soften from oil/blowby and split, causing boost loss, smoke and limp mode.

If you find it: Fit a catch-can (Provent) and silicone (Samco) hoses; rebuild/replace turbo as needed.

From 120k-200k km · ~$1500-4000

mediumHot-day no-start / stalling (crank sensor, starter heat-soak)

Look for: A failing crankshaft position sensor and a heat-soaking starter motor cause intermittent stalling and no-start in hot Australian conditions.

If you find it: Replace crank sensor; heat-shield/replace starter; check fuel delivery.

mediumRocker arm / lifter wear

Look for: Worn rocker arms and lifters cause a top-end tick, rough idle and lost performance, usually from extended oil intervals.

If you find it: Strict oil servicing; replace rockers/lifters when worn.

From 150k+ km · ~$800-2500

mediumEGR / intake soot

Look for: Soot builds in the EGR and intake, restricting airflow and causing rough running and codes.

If you find it: EGR and intake clean; catch-can reduces recurrence.

From 120k+ km · ~$300-900

3.8L EGH V6 petrol

mediumCracked exhaust manifolds / broken manifold bolts

Look for: Heat-cycling cracks the cast manifolds and snaps the manifold-to-head bolts, producing a ticking/exhaust-leak noise that follows revs and can throw catalyst-efficiency codes (P0420/P0430).

If you find it: Replace manifolds and gaskets, extract broken bolts; aftermarket manifolds available.

mediumExcessive oil consumption

Look for: Worn rings/valve seals or a failed PCV let oil into the combustion chamber; chronic consumption fouls plugs and can clog catalytic converters. Severity ranges from a top-up habit to ring-related rebuild.

If you find it: Check PCV first, monitor consumption; major cases need ring/valve-seal work.

From 120k+ km · ~$300-5000

medium42RLE 4-speed auto weakness

Look for: The 4-speed 42RLE is the JK's weakest transmission - tall gaps, prone to wear and overheating when towing or running larger tyres.

If you find it: Fluid services, transmission cooler; rebuild if slipping. Many prefer the later Pentastar's 5-speed.

From 150k+ km · ~$2000-4000

1 minor thing (low severity)

lowRocker arm / lifter tick

Look for: A ticking top-end from worn rocker arms/lifters, usually tied to poor oil maintenance or oil starvation from a leaking cooler.

If you find it: Address oil leaks, change oil on time; replace affected rockers/lifters.
