Overview

The Niro is Kia's dedicated electrified small SUV/crossover - a monocoque, front-wheel-drive-only soft-roader built solely as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full EV (there is no petrol-only or AWD version). Although the first-generation DE launched globally in 2016, Kia Australia did not sell it here until 2021, when it arrived with the full trio: a self-charging Hybrid (HEV), a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) with around 58km of electric range, and the e-Niro/Niro EV. The redesigned second-generation SG2 followed from mid-2022 on Kia's K3 platform (shared with the i30 Sedan), restyled with the distinctive contrast C-pillar 'Aero Blade'; the Australian SG2 range was rationalised to Hybrid and EV only (the SG2 PHEV was detailed globally but Kia AU chose not to bring it). The HEV and PHEV both use a 1.6-litre GDi four (Kappa G4LE on the DE, Smartstream G1.6 on the SG2) paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission - and that DCT, not a CVT, is the single most important thing for a used buyer to understand: dry-clutch DCTs from the Hyundai/Kia family can judder, hesitate and clunk at low speed, and the actuator that operates them was the subject of a serious Australian fire-risk recall. The 1.6 GDi is also a direct-injection engine prone to intake-valve carbon at higher km. The full EVs sidestep the engine and gearbox issues entirely but bring their own concerns: the well-documented Hyundai/Kia ICCU 12V-charging failure, a driveshaft/loss-of-drive recall, and normal lithium battery degradation. Buy a serviced HEV or EV with the HCA recall confirmed done, and the Niro is a sensible, frugal, well-warranted (7-year Kia) used soft-roader.

Hydraulic Clutch Actuator (HCA) fire-risk recall
Moisture can enter the PCB inside the Hydraulic Clutch Actuator that operates the DCT, causing an electrical short and a potential engine-bay fire. Around 1300+ first-gen (DE) Niro HEV/PHEV were recalled in Australia. Affected cars were advised to be parked outside away from structures until rectified.
Fix: Confirm the HCA recall has been completed via the VIN on Kia Australia's recall portal; have the actuator inspected and replaced free under the campaign if not done.
