Discovery 3
Overview
Sold in Australia as S, SE and HSE. The Discovery 3 was a genuine leap forward in capability - it introduced the integrated body-frame chassis, cross-linked air suspension, dual-range full-time 4WD and the brilliant Terrain Response system that made it astonishingly capable off-road and a superb tourer on it. The catch is the ownership: it is the classic 'buy the car, marry the mechanic' Land Rover. The mainstay 2.7L TdV6 (the Ford/PSA-derived Lion V6 diesel) is the one almost everyone bought; the 4.0L Ford Cologne V6 petrol was the cheap base option and the 4.4L Jaguar AJ-V8 petrol was the thirsty flagship. The diesel's timing belt is a critical 100,000km/7-year item that wrecks the engine if it lets go, and the same engine has a documented crankshaft-snap failure between the 2nd and 3rd main bearings. Add air-suspension faults, electrical gremlins and steering/front-end wear and you have a vehicle that is wonderful when sorted and bankrupting when neglected. Buy only with a full Land Rover-specialist service history and a fresh timing belt, and budget for ongoing maintenance.
Engines & variants
2.7L TdV6 turbo-diesel V6
Pros
- Strong, refined 440Nm torque - the engine to have in a D3
- By far the most common variant, so parts/specialist knowledge are best
- Far more economical and longer-legged than the petrols
- Excellent tourer and tow vehicle when maintained
- Terrain Response and dual-range make it superbly capable
Cons
- Timing belt is a critical engine-killer if neglected - non-negotiable scheduled item
- Documented crankshaft-snap failure between the 2nd and 3rd main bearings
- EGR coolers crack and can dump coolant into the engine
- Expensive to service and repair at a specialist
- Plastic coolant components go brittle and fail with age
Known problems
4.0L V6 petrol (Cologne)
Pros
- Cheapest way into a D3 and avoids the diesel's timing-belt/crank risks
- Chain-driven timing - no scheduled belt
- Simple older Ford-derived V6, no DPF or diesel after-treatment
- Same capable chassis, air suspension and Terrain Response
Cons
- Thirsty and underpowered for a 2.6-tonne wagon
- Rare in Australia (most buyers chose the diesel) - lower resale interest
- Modest torque makes it lazy when loaded or towing
- Still carries all the D3's air-suspension and electrical risks
Known problems
4.4L V8 petrol (AJ-V8)
Pros
- Smooth, strong and genuinely quick for the era
- Chain-driven Jaguar V8 - avoids the diesel's timing-belt/crank failures
- The pre-2010 AJ-V8 avoids the worse timing-chain issues of later JLR V8s
- No DPF or diesel injector/EGR complexity
Cons
- Very thirsty - 16-20 L/100km and worse towing
- Rare and expensive flagship; fewer specialists familiar with it
- High torque arrives high in the rev range vs the diesel
- All the D3 air-suspension and electrical risks still apply
