Overview

Sold in Australia as S, SE and HSE. The Discovery 3 was a genuine leap forward in capability - it introduced the integrated body-frame chassis, cross-linked air suspension, dual-range full-time 4WD and the brilliant Terrain Response system that made it astonishingly capable off-road and a superb tourer on it. The catch is the ownership: it is the classic 'buy the car, marry the mechanic' Land Rover. The mainstay 2.7L TdV6 (the Ford/PSA-derived Lion V6 diesel) is the one almost everyone bought; the 4.0L Ford Cologne V6 petrol was the cheap base option and the 4.4L Jaguar AJ-V8 petrol was the thirsty flagship. The diesel's timing belt is a critical 100,000km/7-year item that wrecks the engine if it lets go, and the same engine has a documented crankshaft-snap failure between the 2nd and 3rd main bearings. Add air-suspension faults, electrical gremlins and steering/front-end wear and you have a vehicle that is wonderful when sorted and bankrupting when neglected. Buy only with a full Land Rover-specialist service history and a fresh timing belt, and budget for ongoing maintenance.

Pros

Timing belt failure (and oil-pump housing boss)
The TdV6 front timing belt drives the oil pump and must be replaced every 100,000km/7 years. If it lets go the engine is destroyed. Worse, the belt tensioner bolts to the oil-pump housing and the mounting boss can snap - so the belt can jump teeth even after a fresh belt if the (uprated) oil pump isn't replaced at the same time.
Fix: Replace the timing belt strictly on schedule AND fit the uprated oil pump at the same time (adds ~$600). Use a Land Rover specialist; demand documented belt history before buying.

Crankshaft snap / main-bearing failure
A well-known catastrophic failure where the crankshaft fractures between the 2nd and 3rd main bearings, often after oil starvation or a bearing shell rotating and blocking oil supply (linked to assembly/oil-pickup issues). Early warning is a dull knock from the crank area, oil-pressure warnings or metallic debris in the oil.
Fix: There is no cheap fix once it lets go - a reconditioned/replacement long engine is required. Religious oil changes with the correct oil and a clean oil pickup are the best prevention.

The EGR coolers crack and can leak coolant into the exhaust/intake side, causing coolant loss, white smoke and potential engine damage if ignored.

The 4.0 V6 has to work hard hauling the heavy D3; 15-18 L/100km is normal and worse when towing or loaded. Not a fault, but a real ownership cost.

Air suspension faults (compressor, valve block, airbags)
The cross-linked air suspension is a signature D3 weak point. The compressor wears and overheats (often from a leaking airbag making it run constantly), the valve block leaks, and the rubber air springs perish - throwing 'suspension fault' messages and dropping or refusing to raise the vehicle. Codes like C1A20/C1A01 point to compressor or valve-block issues.
Fix: Diagnose the leak first (don't just replace the compressor); renew perished airbags, reseal/replace the valve block, and fit a quality compressor. Some owners fit upgraded/aftermarket compressors.

Electrical gremlins (CAN bus, modules, sensors)
The D3 is notorious for electrical faults - random warning lights, module communication errors, parking-brake faults, Terrain Response/ABS sensor codes and battery-drain issues. A weak battery alone throws a cascade of unrelated faults.
Fix: Fit a good battery first, then diagnose with proper Land Rover diagnostics (not generic OBD); chase earths and connectors before replacing modules.
