Look for: The Mazda Connect head unit can suffer freezes, reboots, Bluetooth/USB dropouts, sat-nav glitches and occasional blank screens; some faults are shared with the CX-5/Mazda3 and are software-related, a few are hardware.

If you find it: Software/firmware update first; replace the display or head unit only if hardware-faulty.

Look for: Like other Mazdas, the paint is relatively thin and chips easily, particularly on dark colours and the popular Soul Red Crystal; stone chips on the bonnet and front are common.

Look for: A groan or squeal from the brakes when reversing is reported across Mazda's SkyActiv range; it is almost always noise rather than a defect.

Look for: Like all SkyActiv-G direct-injection petrols, carbon builds on the intake valves over time (no port-injection wash), which can cause rough idle, a minor misfire or reduced response at higher km. Cheap conventional oils accelerate it via PCV vapours.

If you find it: Walnut-blast / intake clean if symptomatic; quality oil and regular oil changes slow it.

Look for: The 2.5 with cylinder deactivation can show minor vibration or a low-rev drone as deactivation hardware and engine mounts age; mounts losing damping fluid are a known cheap-to-fix vibration source on the SkyActiv-G 2.5.

If you find it: Replace failed engine mount(s); diagnose deactivation hardware only if a fault code is present.

lowi-ACTIV AWD coupling / fluid neglect (AWD models)

Look for: The on-demand i-ACTIV AWD uses an electronically controlled rear coupling; neglected rear-diff/coupling fluid can cause shudder on tight turns or coupling wear, though it is far less failure-prone than rival CVT-based AWD systems.

If you find it: Service the rear diff/coupling fluid per schedule; diagnose any tight-turn shudder before purchase.

low24V mild-hybrid / belt-ISG and battery faults

Look for: The M Hybrid system adds a belt-driven integrated starter-generator and a separate 24V battery; faults here can disable the mild-hybrid assist/auto-start function and trigger warnings, on top of the car's 12V parasitic-drain issue.

If you find it: Diagnose the ISG/24V battery; apply any related software updates and replace failed hybrid components.
