Overview

The J10 Dualis was Nissan Australia's first compact crossover and one of the cars that kicked off the small-SUV boom here; it was sold from late 2007 (Series I) and substantially facelifted as the Series II in 2010, with the longer seven-seat Dualis+2 added alongside. Unusually for a Nissan sold in Australia it was built in Sunderland, England (it is the same car as the European Qashqai), not Japan. For almost its entire Australian life the only engine was the 2.0-litre MR20DE petrol four (ST, Ti and TS grades), offered as front-wheel drive or with an on-demand ALL MODE 4x4-i AWD, and paired with a six-speed manual or - far more commonly - Nissan's Xtronic CVT. A 1.6-litre R9M turbo-diesel (the TS diesel, 96kW/320Nm) arrived very late, only from May 2013, manual-only and front-drive-only, so genuine AU diesel Dualises are rare. The buyer's case against the Dualis is built around the Xtronic CVT (juddering, whining and outright failure with eye-watering replacement bills, made worse by Nissan calling the fluid 'sealed for life'), the MR20DE's appetite for oil and its timing-chain tensioner/stretch issues at higher km, and the Takata passenger airbag recall that swept up these cars. A well-serviced manual, or a CVT car with documented transmission-fluid changes and a healthy oil-consumption check, is the only safe way to buy one.

Pros

Xtronic CVT judder, whine and failure
The Jatco-built Xtronic CVT is the defining Dualis problem: owners report a constant shudder at 50-70km/h, whining/droning that worsens with age, hesitant or surging take-up, and outright failure. Nissan marketed the fluid as 'sealed for life', so many cars never had a fluid change and the unit cooked itself. Replacement is whole-unit (no part-repair) and very expensive relative to the car's value.
Fix: Insist on documented CVT-fluid changes (around every 60,000km despite 'sealed' claims) and a healthy fluid colour; test for shudder/whine on a flat road and under load; budget for a replacement unit if history is unknown - or buy the six-speed manual.

Oil consumption (piston rings) at high km
The MR20DE is documented for rising oil consumption as it ages - some engines use well over a litre per 1000km once the rings/oil-control are worn past ~140-150k km, with blue smoke on start-up or under load.
Fix: Check the dipstick and watch for exhaust smoke before buying; monitor and top up between services; severe cases need a ring/piston job. Strict oil-change discipline slows it.

Timing-chain tensioner wear and chain stretch
The chain tensioner can fail and the chain stretch on higher-km MR20DE engines, giving a rattle on start-up or under load, a CEL for cam/crank correlation, and lost power. Left alone a badly stretched chain risks valve contact.
Fix: Listen for a cold-start chain rattle; replace the chain, guides and tensioner as a kit if stretched; keep to clean oil and intervals to prolong chain life.

Coil pack / ignition misfire
Individual ignition coils can fail with age, causing a misfire, rough idle, flashing CEL and lost power - a common, cheap MR20DE niggle.

Pros

  • Excellent quoted economy (4.5 L/100km) with idle stop-start and long touring range
  • Strong 320Nm low-down torque from 1750rpm - far better in-gear than the 2.0 petrol
  • Manual-only, so it avoids the troublesome Xtronic CVT entirely

Cons

  • Arrived only in May 2013 right at the end of J10 production - genuine AU TS diesels are rare and were never AWD or seven-seat
  • DPF/EGR carbon problems are common on the R9M, especially short-trip city use
  • R9M has a known history of timing-chain and oil-pump/lubrication concerns
  • Manual-only and FWD-only; thin dealer diesel expertise on a discontinued model

DPF clogging and EGR / intake carbon fouling
Short urban trips stop the DPF completing regenerations, leading to a clogged filter, repeated forced regens, EGR and intake-manifold soot, limp mode and warning lights. The 1.6 R9M is a small, busy diesel that does not suit short-trip-only use.
Fix: Do regular 20-30 minute highway runs so the DPF can regenerate; clean the EGR and intake if coked; budget for a DPF on a neglected town car. Avoid this engine for short-trip-only duty.

The Renault-Nissan R9M diesel has a documented history of timing-chain wear and oil-pump/oil-feed problems that can starve the top end and, in bad cases, lead to serious engine damage. A chain rattle or low oil pressure warning must be taken seriously.
Fix: Insist on full diesel service history and correct-spec oil at short intervals; investigate any chain rattle or oil-pressure light immediately; have a diesel specialist inspect before purchase.
