Overview

Nissan's polarising baby crossover, sold in Australia as the F15 (launched here in 2013, runout to ~2019) and the all-new F16 (from 2020 to current). It is a small monocoque soft-roader built on a hatch platform - mostly front-wheel drive, with genuine on-demand AWD only on the F15 1.6 turbo Ti-S. The F15 Australian range used three petrol engines: a 1.6 naturally aspirated HR16DE (86kW, CVT, base ST), a punchy 1.6 turbo MR16DDT/DIG-T (140kW, 6-speed manual or CVT, FWD or AWD in the Ti-S), and a 1.2 turbo HRA2DDT/DIG-T (85kW, 6-speed manual, added 2015 on the ST). Australia never got the 1.5 dCi diesel sold in Europe. The F16 dropped to a single Renault-Nissan-sourced 1.0 turbo three-cylinder HR10DDT (84kW) with a 6-speed manual (early base ST) or, for most cars, a 7-speed wet dual-clutch (DCT). The buyer caveats define this car: the F15 turbo engines have a well-documented timing-chain stretch/rattle problem, the Jatco Xtronic CVT (JF015E) on the 1.6 cars can judder and fail expensively, the F16's 7-speed DCT shudders/hesitates from a standstill, all DIG-T direct-injection engines build intake-valve carbon, and the F15 is caught up in the Takata airbag recall. Cheap to buy but research-intensive: insist on transmission-fluid history, timing-chain health and completed recalls.

Xtronic CVT judder, hesitation and failure
The Jatco Xtronic CVT can shudder, slip, hesitate on take-up and overheat, with failures clustering between roughly 80,000 and 130,000km - worse on cars with neglected fluid. It is the weakest part of the NA Juke.
Fix: Change CVT fluid (Nissan NS-3) early and regularly despite 'sealed' claims; software reflash for shudder; budget for a rebuilt/replacement unit if history is unknown.

The MR16DDT (and related DIG-T fours) are notorious for timing-chain stretch and tensioner wear, producing a rattle on cold start and, if ignored, jumped timing with bent valves and possible engine destruction. One of the defining reasons to inspect a turbo Juke carefully.
Fix: Listen for cold-start rattle, scan for timing-correlation/cam-crank codes; replace chain, tensioner and guides proactively; strict oil-change discipline slows the wear.
