highModified, drifted or crash-repaired history

Look for: The single biggest risk with any S15. Most survivors have been drifted, tracked, boosted, repainted or repaired after damage. Hidden chassis damage, dodgy wiring, mismatched parts and tired engines are common, and a written-off/rebuilt car carries real safety and resale risk.

If you find it: Insist on a thorough pre-purchase inspection, compression/leakdown test, PPSR/written-off check and a full history; pay more for a genuinely stock, well-documented example.

highCooling system age / overheating

Look for: Original radiators corrode internally, plastic end-tanks crack, hoses harden and the water pump wears. Overheating an SR20DET can warp or crack the head - effectively ending the engine.

If you find it: Refresh the cooling system (radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat, fresh coolant); an alloy radiator is a common, sensible upgrade.

mediumTheft and high insurance

Look for: As a sought-after, appreciating JDM coupe, the S15 200SX is a theft target and attracts high insurance premiums, especially for younger drivers.

If you find it: Fit a quality immobiliser/tracking, secure storage, and agreed-value classic insurance where eligible.

Look for: Aging examples can rust in the rear arches, sills, boot floor and around the windscreen, worse on coastal or poorly repaired cars.

200SX Spec R 2.0L turbo

highOver-boost / engine damage on modified cars

Look for: The SR20DET is robust at stock power, but the Spec R is the car most likely to have been heavily boosted. Lean tunes, boost spikes, ringland failure and rod/bearing damage are common on poorly tuned or thrashed examples.

If you find it: Avoid modified cars without a proven, professional tune and records; compression/leakdown test and dyno history before buying. Budget for a forged rebuild if power is wanted.

mediumTiming chain guide and tensioner wear

Look for: The SR20DET uses a timing chain, but the plastic guides and hydraulic tensioner harden and wear with heat and age. A persistent rattle on startup that does not clear is chain slap; ignored, it can skip and cause valve-to-piston contact.

If you find it: Replace the full timing chain kit (chain, guides, tensioner, gaskets) at a specialist.

200SX Spec S 2.0L turbo

mediumCrank angle sensor (CAS) failure

Look for: The optical crank/cam angle sensor on the back of the exhaust cam degrades with heat and age, causing intermittent stalling, misfires, rough idle or a no-start. Cracked sensor housings let moisture in and a chafed loom can short it.

If you find it: Replace with a genuine Nissan CAS (23731-50F02 type) and inspect/repair the loom; do not run on cheap aftermarket units.

mediumOil leaks and oil-system wear

Look for: Valve-cover and oil-pan/rocker-cover gaskets weep with age; worn oil pumps, blocked pickups and slightly dented sumps starve oil and have killed otherwise-healthy SR20s.

If you find it: Reseal leaking gaskets, verify oil pressure, and inspect the pickup/sump - especially on a rebuilt or hard-used engine.

mediumTurbo wear (oil seals, shaft play)

Look for: The factory turbo is now 20+ years old; shaft play, oil-seal leaks (blue smoke on startup/boost) and wastegate wear are common, worse on cars that have been boosted or not warmed/cooled properly.

If you find it: Rebuild or replace the turbo; fit a healthy actuator and ensure correct boost control.

200SX GT (limited edition) 2.0L turbo

mediumSame SR20DET wear items (CAS, oil, turbo, chain)

Look for: The GT shares the SR20DET, so the crank angle sensor, oil leaks, aging turbo and timing chain guide/tensioner wear all apply equally.

If you find it: Service as per the Spec S/Spec R items; full pre-purchase inspection by an SR20 specialist.

lowInterior trim wear and aging electrics

Look for: Dash and trim wear, faded plastics, failing climate/window switches and tired wiring are normal on a 20+ year old coupe, often worse where aftermarket gear has been added.

If you find it: Source good used trim; have any non-standard wiring checked and tidied.

lowHICAS rear-steer faults

Look for: The HICAS rear-steer system can develop leaks, worn tie-rods or fault lights with age, giving vague or inconsistent rear-end feel.

If you find it: Repair the HICAS components, or fit a HICAS-delete/lock kit (common and reversible-aware).

lowAuthenticity / originality risk

Look for: Because the GT carries a price premium, badge/trim clones and misrepresented cars exist; the mechanicals are no different to a standard 200SX.

If you find it: Verify build details, compliance plate and history; pay the GT premium only for a documented, original car.
