Overview

Known overseas as the Proton Arena, the Jumbuck is a car-based front-wheel-drive coupe utility built on the Proton Wira platform - itself a licence-built version of the early-1990s Mitsubishi Lancer/Colt. There was only ever one driveline in Australia: Mitsubishi's familiar 1.5-litre 4G15 SOHC 12-valve four with multi-point EFI and a five-speed manual; no automatic and no diesel were offered here. It sold in two trims, the basic GLi and the better-equipped GLSi (power windows/mirrors, gold-accent styling). This is a tiny, light-duty workhorse with roughly a half-tonne payload - not a 4WD tradie's ute - and it carries a poor 2-star ANCAP rating with no airbags on early cars, so safety is a genuine concern. The flip side: the 4G15 is one of the longest-lived Japanese engines ever made and many examples have covered 300,000-400,000km on basic servicing. The headaches are mostly the cheap stuff around it - O2 sensors and check-engine lights, dash electrics and instrument printed circuits, brittle interior plastics and trim, fuel-sender and filler-cap faults, and a timing belt that MUST be kept on schedule because the 4G15 is an interference engine. Genuine Proton parts are scarce and dear now that the brand has left Australia, but most mechanical bits are shared with Lancer/Magna-era Mitsubishis and are cheap aftermarket. Buy on condition and service history, budget for a belt and clutch, and treat it as cheap, disposable, light-duty transport rather than a tough load-lugger.

Timing belt neglect (interference engine)
The 4G15 is a belt-driven interference design. If the belt is overdue and snaps, valves hit pistons and the engine is wrecked. Many cheap used Jumbucks have unknown belt history.
Fix: Replace the timing belt, tensioner and cam/crank seals every ~90,000km or 5 years. Do the water pump at the same time. Demand belt records before buying.

O2 sensor failures and check-engine light
Owners report oxygen sensors failing repeatedly (sometimes several times in a couple of years) along with persistent engine-management warning lights and rough/lean running.
Fix: Replace with a quality sensor (Bosch/NTK universal often fits cheaper than genuine); scan and clear codes, check for exhaust/wiring faults driving repeat failures.

Cheap interior plastics scratch and go brittle; door-step covers, map pockets, document holders, gearshift boot and even the fuel-filler door are reported snapping off or coming loose, and the dash bubbles/warps and rattles early.
Fix: Replace or glue trim with aftermarket/used parts; accept it as the car's nature. Not safety-related.
