Overview

The JT Grand Vitara was Suzuki's compact 'proper' 4WD: a monocoque-with-integrated-ladder-frame body riding on full-time 4WD with a Torsen-type centre diff, selectable centre-diff lock and a genuine dual-range low transfer case (4H / 4H-Lock / 4L). That low-range and a tight body make it surprisingly capable off-road for its size, though limited ground clearance and modest wheel travel are the ceiling. Sold here as a 3-door (1.6) and 5-door (2.0, later 2.4, V6s and the 1.9 diesel), with a 2008/2009 facelift that swapped the 2.0 and 2.7 for the larger 2.4 four and a 3.2 GM-sourced V6, and added the Renault-sourced 1.9 DDiS turbo diesel. Mechanically simple and generally trouble-free by 4WD standards - the four-cylinder petrols are the safe used buy. The two known traps are the petrol V6 timing chains (the older 2.7 H27A especially) and the Renault F9Q 1.9 diesel, which is a high-maintenance, belt-driven engine that scares off serious buyers. Towing is modest (a braked 1850-2000kg depending on variant), so it is a light tourer and town SUV, not a heavy hauler.
