Overview

Toyota's bold coupe-styled small crossover, launched in Australia in February 2017 and built in Japan on the TNGA-C (GA-C) platform shared with the Corolla. It is a monocoque on-road soft-roader sold as the base C-HR, mid-spec and the flagship Koba, with a GR Sport added late in the run. Australia got just two powertrains across this generation: the 1.2L 8NR-FTS turbo-petrol from launch (the volume seller, with a CVT and short-lived AWD option), and the 1.8L 2ZR-FXE petrol-electric hybrid added in August 2020 (FWD only, e-CVT). Note Australia never received the 2.0L M20A-FXS hybrid or any 1.8 hybrid AWD in this first generation - those are second-gen/overseas. Mechanically the C-HR is a Toyota and very robust: both engines use a timing chain, the hybrid's eCVT (a power-split planetary device) has an excellent reliability record, and the 1.2's CVT is far less troublesome than the Jatco/Subaru/Nissan belt-and-pulley CVTs in rivals. The real buyer caveats are minor: the 1.2 turbo is a direct-injection GDi engine so intake/EGR carbon and some oil use appear at higher km; a high-pressure fuel-pump recall affects 2019-2021 cars; a 2019-2023 fire-risk recall was issued in Australia; and the styling brings tight rear visibility and a cramped back seat rather than any mechanical fault. There were no Takata airbag inflators fitted to the C-HR (it launched after the affected era), so that scandal does not apply here.

High-pressure fuel pump recall (2019-2021)
A recall covered 8NR-FTS-engined cars (C-HR and Corolla) where a welded section of the high-pressure fuel pump could crack under pressure and leak fuel - a fire/stall risk. Affected 2019-2021 production.
Fix: Confirm the fuel-pump recall was completed via VIN; if not, Toyota replaces the HP fuel pump free of charge.

Direct-injection intake-valve / EGR carbon coking
As a GDi engine with no port injection to wash the valves, the 8NR-FTS accumulates carbon on the intake valves and the EGR valve fouls - some owners report EGR cleaning needed surprisingly early. Symptoms are rough idle, hesitation and minor misfire.
Fix: Clean or walnut-blast the intake and EGR valve when symptomatic; quality fuel, regular oil changes and occasional highway runs slow the build-up.

Like many small turbo-petrols the 8NR-FTS can develop a progressive thirst for oil, particularly if lugged at low rpm. Usually a monitoring/top-up issue rather than a failure, but heavy consumers may need ring/PCV work.
Fix: Check the level between services and watch for blue smoke; use the correct 0W-20, address a stuck PCV; insist on service history before buying.

The CVT can develop a low-speed judder or shudder reported around 35,000-50,000km, linked to fluid condition and lock-up/variator wear. Outright failure is uncommon for a Toyota CVT but expensive if it happens on a neglected car.
Fix: Change CVT fluid per Toyota's severe-duty guidance rather than 'fill for life'; have any judder diagnosed early; budget for a unit only if history is unknown.

Hybrid (NiMH) drive-battery degradation
The high-voltage nickel-metal-hydride drive battery very gradually loses capacity over a long life, eventually showing reduced EV assist, more engine running and (rarely) a hybrid-system warning. Toyota hybrids are famously long-lived, so this is a high-km/older-car concern, not an early failure.
Fix: Most last well past 200,000km; reconditioned or new battery packs and individual-module repair are available; check for hybrid warnings and battery state on a pre-purchase scan.

Inverter / hybrid coolant pump and 12V battery faults
As with other Toyota hybrids, the small electric inverter coolant pump can fail and trigger a hybrid-system warning, and the auxiliary 12V battery (separate from the drive battery) can go flat and cause no-start or warning lights.
Fix: Replace the inverter coolant pump if it stops circulating; fit a fresh AGM/spec 12V auxiliary battery; clear and verify codes after.

The coupe styling brings a high, narrow rear window, thick C-pillars and small back-door glass, giving poor over-shoulder vision and a dark, cramped rear seat - a design trait that frustrates many owners rather than a fault.
Fix: Use the reversing camera and blind-spot monitor; aftermarket parking sensors or a wider rear-view mirror help; no mechanical remedy.
