Corolla Cross
Overview
The Corolla Cross (XG10) launched in Australia in October 2022 as a high-riding, Corolla-based small SUV built on the TNGA-C platform and shared with the Corolla hatch/sedan and C-HR. It is a monocoque on-road soft-roader, not a genuine off-roader. At launch the range offered two powertrains: a naturally aspirated 2.0L M20A-FKS Dynamic Force petrol (FWD only, CVT) in GX and GXL, and the fifth-generation 2.0L M20A-FXS hybrid (e-CVT) available in front-wheel drive or with on-demand electric E-Four AWD that adds a separate rear axle motor. The hybrid is the smart used buy and the one Toyota kept: the petrol-only variant was dropped in mid-2024 when the range went hybrid-only (GX, GXL, Atmos, plus a later GR Sport grade with sports suspension, 19-inch wheels and a retuned steering/drive mode). Both engines use a timing chain, direct + port injection (D-4S) and are fundamentally robust Toyota units with no DCT and no CVT-belt-style failure risk - the petrol's CVT uses a physical launch gear and the hybrid uses a planetary e-CVT with no clutches or belts to wear out, a real reliability advantage over rivals such as the Subaru Lineartronic, Nissan Xtronic and Hyundai/Kia DCTs. The hybrid drive battery is a compact, well-proven Toyota unit (lithium-ion on later builds) with a long warranty. The genuine buyer caveats here are not powertrain durability but two safety recalls (a steering intermediate-shaft universal-joint crack recall on 2023-2024 cars, and a passenger-airbag instrument-panel perforation recall on some early cars), laggy infotainment, modest braked towing (effectively 750kg, this is not a tow car) and the usual high-km direct-injection and 12V/battery housekeeping. As a Toyota hybrid soft-roader it is one of the safer used choices in the class.

Pros
- Simple, proven naturally aspirated Toyota petrol - no turbo, no DPF
- Timing chain and a Direct Shift-CVT that uses a real launch gear (not a slipping clutch or DCT)
- Cheapest Corolla Cross to buy used; very strong Toyota reliability record
- D-4S dual injection reduces (but does not eliminate) intake-valve carbon
Cons
- Discontinued in Australia in mid-2024 - rarer and the hybrid is the better long-term buy
- FWD only; noticeably thirstier and less refined than the hybrid in town
- Modest performance in a tall body when fully loaded
- Only 750kg braked tow - effectively not a tow car

- Long hybrid-battery warranty and a deep Toyota hybrid service network; the value/long-term pick

Pros
- Electric E-Four AWD adds wet/loose-surface and light-trail traction with no transfer case or driveshaft
- Same frugal hybrid drivetrain - low-5s L/100km even with AWD
- No mechanical AWD coupling, Haldex or prop shaft to fail; rear motor is sealed and low-maintenance
- Proven Toyota hybrid reliability with a long battery warranty
Cons
- Rear motor trims a little boot space and slightly raises fuel use over 2WD
- AWD is traction assistance, not a genuine off-road system
- Still only 750kg braked tow
- Costs more to buy used than the 2WD hybrid for limited real-world benefit
