lowOil consumption (early/high-km 2ZR engines)

Look for: The wider 2ZR family had an oil-consumption history on older builds; later E170 engines are largely fine, but neglected, high-km or extended-interval cars can use oil between services.

If you find it: Check oil level and condition; keep to proper service intervals; ring/PCV work only if consumption is genuinely excessive.

Look for: Front struts, links, bushes and brake pads/rotors are normal wear items on a high-km hatch; rears can seize if the handbrake/calipers are neglected.

If you find it: Standard suspension and brake servicing; not a design fault.

Look for: Hard-plastic dash and door trims can rattle, scuff or fade under sustained Australian sun on older cars.

Look for: With age and infrequent oil changes the Valvematic actuator and oil-control valve screens can clog or lag, giving a brief cold-start valve tick and occasional rough idle. Usually a maintenance/cleanliness issue rather than a failure.

If you find it: Stick to clean low-ash oil at correct intervals; clean or replace the OCV/Valvematic actuator if the tick persists.

Look for: The coolant pump can develop a weep/seep from the weep hole over time, a common 2ZR ancillary item.

If you find it: Replace the water pump (and thermostat/coolant) when leaking; quick straightforward job.

Look for: The small 12V battery (separate from the hybrid pack) can drain or fail if the car sits, leaving it unable to boot the hybrid system.
