Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Injector over-fuelling / excessive smoke
The classic 1VD issue - injectors wear and over-fuel, causing excessive smoke and rough running that worsens with km. Poor-quality diesel and water in the fuel accelerate it. Replacing all eight is a big job.
Fix: Fit a 2-micron secondary fuel filter, use quality diesel, and replace injectors as a set with updated parts when symptoms appear.
From 150k+ km · ~$3500-7000 (set of 8)
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser J200
High
Oil filter housing spout failure
Cartridge oil filter cap has a center spout that can break off. If unnoticed during oil change, the new filter is unsupported and gets sucked into the oil pump - restricting oil flow and destroying the engine.
Fix: ALWAYS check the spout when changing oil filter. Replace cap if showing wear. Cheap insurance.
Any · ~$50 part / $$$$ if missed
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series
High
Oil pick-up plastic strainer
Internal plastic strainer on oil pickup can break and travel into the oil pump - severely restricting oil flow.
Fix: Replace pickup at major service. Pre-emptive job that prevents catastrophic damage.
From 150k+ km · $$ engine damage
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series
High
Injector seal failure / 'black death' carbon leak
Worn injector copper seals let combustion gases blow past, baking a hard tar-like carbon ('black death') around the injector and into the head; injectors themselves also wear and over-fuel, causing smoke and rough running.
Fix: Replace injector seals (and injectors as a set if worn) early; fit a quality secondary fuel filter and use clean diesel. Catching it early avoids head damage.
From 120k+ km · ~$2500-6000 (set of 8 + seals)
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
High
Oil pickup strainer / oil-filter cap debris starving the pump
The plastic oil-pickup strainer and the cartridge oil-filter cap spout can break up; debris or a sucked-in filter restricts oil flow and can wipe out bearings. Low oil pressure at idle is an early warning.
Fix: Use genuine filters, fit the cap correctly, and consider replacing the factory pickup/strainer. Investigate any low idle oil pressure immediately.
Any · ~$3000-12000 if it spins a bearing
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
Medium
Cracked exhaust manifolds / EGR cooler issues
Hard-worked and tuned engines crack exhaust manifolds and accumulate intake/EGR soot; over-fuelling tunes raise back-pressure and shorten turbo life.
Fix: Replace manifolds, clean EGR/intake, keep any tune conservative.
From 150k+ km · ~$800-2500
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser J200 · Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
Medium
DPF clogging on short trips (2015+)
Facelift diesels have a DPF that won't passively regenerate on short, low-speed urban driving, leading to soot loading, forced regens and back-pressure that can stress the turbo/EGR.
Fix: Regular highway runs to allow regen; address early before it cascades into turbo/EGR damage.
Any (post-2015) · ~$500-2500
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser J200
Medium
Turbo and EGR stress from back-pressure
Neglected DPF/injector issues raise exhaust back-pressure and soot, shortening turbo and EGR life.
Fix: Keep the exhaust/after-treatment healthy; catch-can helps reduce intake oiling.
From 150k+ km · ~$2000-5000
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser J200
Medium
Injector failure (fuel contamination)
Piezoelectric injectors fail with poor diesel quality - especially in remote areas.
Fix: Fit a quality secondary fuel filter (Racor or similar). Mandatory for outback duty.
From 150k+ km · ~$2700+ set
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series
Medium
High oil consumption (early units)
Pre-2010 1VD-FTVs had a vacuum pump that caused excessive oil consumption.
Fix: Updated vacuum pump fixes it. Verify replacement done on pre-2010 examples.
Pre-2010 · ~$500-1500
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series
Medium
Starter motor (deep water crossings)
Starter located low in the engine bay - prone to water damage on deep crossings.
Fix: Snorkel + waterproof starter cover. Common upgrade.
After water · ~$600-1200
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series
Medium
DPF clogging on short trips (2016/2017+)
Updated emissions models added a DPF that won't passively regenerate on short, low-speed urban runs, leading to soot loading, forced regens, oil dilution and back-pressure.
Fix: Regular highway running to allow regen; address early before it stresses the turbo/EGR. Some owners fit catch-cans to reduce intake oiling.
Any (post-2016) · ~$500-3000
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
