LandCruiser 70
Overview
The 70 Series is Toyota's longest-running LandCruiser line and the definitive Australian heavy-duty 4WD - a leaf/coil live-axle, part-time dual-range workhorse sold continuously since 1984 as the troopcarrier (HZJ75 then HZJ78/VDJ78 'Troopy') and, from 2007, the five-seat 76 wagon. Body styles relevant here are the wagon and the Troopcarrier; the utes are catalogued separately. Engine history spans the early carburetted 3F 4.0 petrol six and 2H/3B naturally-aspirated diesels, the long-serving 1HZ 4.2 indirect-injection diesel six and 1FZ-FE 4.5 petrol six (1990s-2007), the iconic 1VD-FTV 4.5 turbo-diesel V8 (2007-2024, single-turbo 151kW/430Nm in the 70 unlike the twin-turbo 200), and from 2023-24 the modern 1GD-FTV 2.8 four-cylinder turbo-diesel paired (for the first time in a 70) with a six-speed automatic. Brutally simple, immensely capable off-road and almost endlessly rebuildable, but old-school in ride, refinement and safety. Buy on engine, service history and rust - the chassis and driveline are the easy part. The factory-narrow front track, recirculating-ball steering and live-axle geometry make the 70 famous for 'death wobble' if the front end is worn or a lift is fitted without caster correction.

4.5L 1VD-FTV turbo-diesel V8
Pros
- Effortless V8 torque and a glorious soundtrack - the enthusiast favourite
- Detuned single-turbo state makes it very robust and easy to live with
- Pre-2016 examples have no DPF and are mechanically simpler
- Cast-iron block, huge aftermarket and dealer support, 400k+ km achievable
- Strong resale - the V8 70 is now a sought-after collectible
Cons
- Only ever offered with a 5-speed manual (no auto on the V8)
- Eight injectors and seals make injector work expensive
- Post-2016 DPF dislikes short urban running
- Thirsty and slow by modern standards; gearing is tall and noisy

2.8L 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel four-cylinder
Pros
- Brings a six-speed automatic to the 70 for the first time
- More torque (500Nm) and far better economy than the old V8
- Modern safety and driver-assist not available on V8 stock
- Easier to drive in traffic and on long highway stints
Cons
- Lacks the character and cult appeal of the V8
- Same 1GD that drew DPF/oil-consumption complaints in HiLux/Prado/Fortuner
- Four-cylinder works harder than the V8 when heavily loaded/towing
- Long-term durability in the heavy 70 platform is still unproven

4.2L 1HZ naturally-aspirated diesel six
Pros
- Mechanically simple indirect-injection diesel - no electronics to fail
- Legendary high-km durability (500k+ km, fleet examples beyond 700k)
- Easy to work on anywhere; massive global parts support
- Sought-after touring engine, often turbo'd safely with a healthy build
Cons
- Genuinely slow - struggles loaded, towing or on hills NA
- Indirect injection runs hot in the head; cooling must be perfect
- Smoky and tired if the injection pump/injectors are worn (most are old now)
- Thirstier than its small displacement suggests when worked
Known problems
4.5L 1FZ-FE petrol six
Pros
- Smooth, torquey, durable big petrol six - timing chain, no belt service
- Cheaper to buy than the diesels because petrol scares buyers off
- Cast-iron block, popular and strong forced-induction base
- Easier cold starting and quieter than the IDI diesel
Cons
- Very thirsty (16-20 L/100km), poor range without LPG/long-range tank
- Head-gasket failures, especially on early (1992-1995) and overheated examples
- Less torque-per-litre feel than a turbo-diesel for heavy towing
- Weaker resale than the diesel variants
Known problems
4.0L 3F petrol six (early)
Pros
- Simple, tough pushrod six - cheap to own and run mechanically
- Cheapest way into an early FJ7x wagon/Troopy
- Takes LPG well; plenty of bush-mechanic knowledge
Cons
- Very thirsty for modest power; carburettor (3F) needs setup know-how
- All examples are now old and high-km - condition is everything
- Slow and gutless next to later engines
Known problems
Early naturally-aspirated diesel (2H 4.0 / 3B 3.4)
Pros
- Dead-simple mechanical IDI diesels - no electronics at all
- Gear-driven timing, easy to repair in the bush
- Frugal for the era; cheapest diesel entry to an early 70
- Superseded by the better 1HZ, so often very cheap
Cons
- Slow and weak even by NA-diesel standards (especially the 3B four)
- All are very old and high-hour now - condition over spec
- 2H is heavy on the cooling system; head/gasket risk if neglected
- Smoky if injection pump/injectors are worn
