Overview

The 70 Series is Toyota's longest-running LandCruiser line and the definitive Australian heavy-duty 4WD - a leaf/coil live-axle, part-time dual-range workhorse sold continuously since 1984 as the troopcarrier (HZJ75 then HZJ78/VDJ78 'Troopy') and, from 2007, the five-seat 76 wagon. Body styles relevant here are the wagon and the Troopcarrier; the utes are catalogued separately. Engine history spans the early carburetted 3F 4.0 petrol six and 2H/3B naturally-aspirated diesels, the long-serving 1HZ 4.2 indirect-injection diesel six and 1FZ-FE 4.5 petrol six (1990s-2007), the iconic 1VD-FTV 4.5 turbo-diesel V8 (2007-2024, single-turbo 151kW/430Nm in the 70 unlike the twin-turbo 200), and from 2023-24 the modern 1GD-FTV 2.8 four-cylinder turbo-diesel paired (for the first time in a 70) with a six-speed automatic. Brutally simple, immensely capable off-road and almost endlessly rebuildable, but old-school in ride, refinement and safety. Buy on engine, service history and rust - the chassis and driveline are the easy part. The factory-narrow front track, recirculating-ball steering and live-axle geometry make the 70 famous for 'death wobble' if the front end is worn or a lift is fitted without caster correction.
