High
Defective DPF (Oct 2015 - Apr 2020 class action)
The early 1GD DPF was found by the Federal Court to be defective: it could not regenerate effectively in normal use, clogging up, emitting white smoke and a foul exhaust smell during regen, and warning that the filter was full. Affected HiLux/Prado/Fortuner diesels bought Oct 2015-Apr 2020 were eligible for compensation for lost value.
Fix: Confirm any DPF-related field fixes/software are applied, check the car has the post-2018 manual regen function, do regular highway runs; severe cases need DPF clean or replacement. Check class-action/compensation status.
Any (especially short urban trips) · ~$500-3500

DPF clogging / white smoke (class action defect)
The 1GD-FTV DPF system in vehicles acquired 7 Feb 2016 - 19 Dec 2024 was found defective by the Federal Court (upheld by the High Court Nov 2024): early software could let the DPF clog, producing excessive white smoke, poor performance and forced regens. Toyota fitted manual regen switches and issued ECU/field fixes; affected owners may be eligible under the class action.
Fix: Confirm the DPF software/field-fix campaign has been applied; do regular highway runs and manual regens; check class-action eligibility. Out-of-warranty DPF replacement is costly.
Any (software/usage related) · ~$0-3000 (campaign vs out-of-warranty DPF)

Air intake dusting / MAF failure
Fine dust bypasses the air filter and contaminates the MAF sensor. Triggers limp mode and disables traction/stability control.
Fix: Aftermarket pre-cleaner snorkel (Donaldson, Safari, etc) plus sealed airbox kit. MAF clean or replace.
From 50k+ km · ~$500-1500
Listed for: Toyota Hilux N80

MAF sensor dust contamination - limp mode
Fine dust can coat the mass-airflow sensor, feeding bad data to the ECU and dropping the van into limp mode - same trait as other 1GD-FTV applications.
Fix: Clean or replace the MAF; fit a quality air filter and ensure airbox sealing.
Any (dusty/rural work) · ~$150-450
Listed for: Toyota HiAce H300 · Toyota LandCruiser Prado J150 · Toyota LandCruiser Prado J250
Medium
High oil consumption / fuel-in-oil dilution (early build)
Early 1GD engines reported high oil consumption, and frequent failed/incomplete DPF regens plus short-trip running can dilute the engine oil with diesel, raising oil level and degrading lubrication.
Fix: Apply Toyota's ECU software update, monitor oil level/condition, change oil on time, give the engine regular long hot runs.
Any (early build) · ~$300-2000
Listed for: Toyota Fortuner AN160 · Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
Medium
Injector and EGR / intake carbon
Common-rail injectors wear and the EGR/intake accumulates soot over time, causing rough running, smoke and reduced performance - worsened by poor fuel quality and infrequent servicing.
Fix: Injector test/replacement by a diesel specialist; EGR and intake clean; quality fuel and filtration.
From 120k+ km · ~$500-2500
Listed for: Toyota Fortuner AN160 · Toyota LandCruiser Prado J250
Medium
Injector / EGR carbon at higher km
Standard common-rail maintenance - injector wear and EGR/intake soot build-up at higher mileage causing smoke, rough idle and lost power.
Fix: Injector service, EGR and intake clean as needed; quality fuel and on-time servicing.
From 150k+ km · ~$500-2500
Listed for: Toyota Fortuner AN160 · Toyota LandCruiser Prado J150
Medium
EGR and intake carbon build-up
Like all modern common-rail diesels, the 1GD accumulates soot in the EGR valve and intake, causing rough running, reduced economy and limp-mode events - worse on short stop-start delivery cycles.
Fix: EGR and intake clean; consider a catch-can; mix in regular highway running to keep temps up.
From 100k+ km (sooner on urban use) · ~$400-1200
Listed for: Toyota HiAce H300 · Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
Medium
DPF clogging on short urban-only use
Even with the improved hardware and the manual regen button, a DPF diesel used only for short cold trips will accumulate soot, throw DPF-full warnings and need forced regens; neglected cases require a clean.
Fix: Use the manual regen function as directed, do regular highway drives, address warnings promptly; DPF clean/replace if badly clogged.
Any (urban use) · ~$300-2000
Listed for: Toyota Fortuner AN160
Medium
Turbo VNT vane sticking
Carbon can cause the variable-nozzle turbo vanes/actuator to stick, giving over- or under-boost, limp mode and lost performance.
Fix: Clean or replace the VNT/turbo, service the EGR; keep the intake clean.
From 120k+ km · ~$1500-3000
Listed for: Toyota Fortuner AN160
Medium
EGR cooler clogging
Combined with DPF issues, EGR cooler clogs heavily.
Fix: EGR delete or full clean. Inspect during DPF work.
From 80-120k km · ~$800-1500
Listed for: Toyota Hilux N80

DPF white smoke / clogging (class-action history)
The 1GD in HiLux/Prado/Fortuner (Oct 2015-Apr 2020 build) was the subject of an Australian class action over DPF white smoke and incomplete regens; Toyota revised the software and says the 70 application is improved, but short-trip DPF loading remains the engine's key watch-point.
Fix: Ensure all DPF/ECU software updates are applied; do regular highway runs; service on time.

Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser 70 76 Wagon / 78 Troopcarrier
Medium
DPF clogging / high oil consumption (2015-2017)
Early 1GD diesels suffered clogged DPFs and high oil consumption. Toyota service campaign GGG38 (June 2017) reflashed the ECU to raise exhaust temps and lengthen regen, largely resolving it.
Fix: Confirm the GGG38 update is applied; do regular highway runs; monitor oil level.
Any (early build) · ~$500-2500
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser Prado J150
Medium
DPF clogging / regen issues on short-trip use
The 1GD-FTV's diesel particulate filter is the engine family's long-running weak point (the subject of an Australian class action over the 2015-2020 HiLux/Fortuner/Prado calibration). Cars driven mostly on short urban trips can't complete a passive regen, leading to a clogging warning, forced/active regens, fuel dilution of the oil and white smoke. The 250's revised calibration is better but the physics are unchanged.
Fix: Do a regular highway run (20+ min above ~80km/h and ~2500rpm) to allow passive regen; keep service software up to date; don't interrupt an active regen. Worst case is a DPF clean or replacement.
Any (urban/short-trip use) · ~$300-3500
Listed for: Toyota LandCruiser Prado J250
Low
Timing chain / front-end noise at high km
Owners have reported timing-chain/front-cover noise on high-km examples (e.g. 180k km), usually a tensioner/guide wear issue rather than a snapped chain.
Fix: Diagnose noise early; replace chain, tensioner and guides if rattling under load.
From 150k+ km · ~$800-2500
Listed for: Toyota HiAce H300
