Overview
The N80 was Toyota's first DPF-equipped Hilux and the headline story is the DPF class action. Pre-July 2020 examples are subject to the Federal Court class action covering ~264,000 vehicles. Post-July 2020 examples (1GD-FTV revised) addressed the DPF issues and got a substantial power bump to 150kW/500Nm. Sold as Workmate, SR, SR5, Rogue, Rugged X trims.

- Avoid unless built after July 2020
Known problems
high
DPF system defect (class action)
Federal Court found the DPF defective on units built October 2015 to April 2020. Symptoms: white smoke regens, foul smell, repeated regen warnings, fuel consumption spike, limp mode.
Fix: Updated DPF and software available via Toyota recall/TSB. Check service history for the fix. Original owners eligible for class action settlement payout.
high
Air intake dusting / MAF failure
Fine dust bypasses the air filter and contaminates the MAF sensor. Triggers limp mode and disables traction/stability control.
Fix: Aftermarket pre-cleaner snorkel (Donaldson, Safari, etc) plus sealed airbox kit. MAF clean or replace.
medium
EGR cooler clogging
Combined with DPF issues, EGR cooler clogs heavily.
Fix: EGR delete or full clean. Inspect during DPF work.

Cons
- Expensive used market
- Some EGR carbon still reported
- Rear leaf sag under heavy load
- Premium over rivals not always justified
Known problems
medium
EGR intake carbon (residual)
Carbon buildup still occurs but less aggressive than pre-fix 1GD. Causes rough idle and hesitation.
Fix: Intake clean every 80-100k km. Catch can fitment helps.
low
Rear leaf spring sag
Rear sags under sustained heavy load. Common across all N80.
Fix: Add a leaf, upgraded leaf pack (Dobinsons, Lovells), or airbag helpers.

Pros
- Cheapest Hilux N80 variant
- Same chassis benefits as the 1GD
- Better fuel economy than 1GD
Cons
- Same DPF class action affects pre-mid-2020
- Underpowered for the chassis weight
- Lower tow rating (3200kg)
- Less desirable used - resale lower
Known problems
high
DPF class action (pre-mid-2020)
Same DPF defect as the 1GD-FTV affects the 2.4L 2GD-FTV.
Fix: Updated DPF/software via Toyota. Check service history for the fix.
low
Underpowered for heavy work
Not really a fault but the 2.4 runs out of legs under load. Many find themselves wishing for the 2.8.
Fix: Step up to the 1GD-FTV. Limited aftermarket tuning gains on the 2.4.
Common problems (all variants)
low
Front lower control arm bush wear
Front IFS lower control arm bushes wear, causing vague steering and uneven tyre wear.
Fix: Polyurethane or OEM bush kit replacement. Easy DIY with basic tools.
low
Rear leaf spring sag
Rear leaf packs sag under sustained heavy load. Affects all N80 variants.
Fix: Upgraded leaf pack or airbag helpers.
medium
Auto trans (6AT) heat under tow
6-speed auto shifts harshly when transmission temperature rises during sustained heavy towing.
Fix: External transmission cooler upgrade if towing regularly.
low
Headlight condensation (early N80)
Early N80 headlights develop internal condensation due to seal failures.
Fix: Warranty replacement if eligible. Aftermarket reseal kits available.
low
Power window regulator failure
Standard Toyota plastic regulator clip failure.
Fix: Replacement regulator. Easy DIY with door card off.
