Overview
Mechanical-injection era Hilux. Solid front axle on 4WD. The 2L-T is the only turbo in this generation; 2L and 3L are non-turbo IDI diesels. Widely regarded as one of the toughest pre-electronics utes ever sold in Australia. Most surviving examples are well-loved or thrashed — condition varies wildly.

Pros
- Mechanical injection - no electronics to fail
- Solid front axle - off-road legend
- Bulletproof bottom end
- Easiest DIY rebuild in the segment
- Indirect injection forgives bad fuel
Cons
- Painfully slow - 60kW NA
- Rust-prone (especially chassis)
- No safety to speak of
- Hard to find with low km / clean body
Known problems
high
Chassis rust
Common on examples used in coastal or wet conditions. Rear wheel arches, chassis rails, cab mounts. Can write off the truck.
Fix: Walk away from rusty examples. Treat dry-state examples with cavity wax and underbody coatings.
low
King pin / front axle wear
Solid front axle king pins wear over time, causing vague steering.
Fix: King pin kit replacement. DIY-friendly with hand tools.

Pros
- Mechanical injection - no electronics to fail
- Solid front axle - off-road legend
- Bulletproof bottom end if not abused
- Easiest DIY rebuild in the segment
- Genuinely usable performance for the era
Cons
- Turbo coking if shut down hot - non-negotiable
- Rust-prone (especially chassis)
- Original turbos tired on most surviving examples
- No safety to speak of

Fix: Walk away from rusty examples. Treat dry-state examples with cavity wax and underbody coatings.
medium
2L-T turbo coking
Shutting down hot causes oil to coke in the turbo journal bearings. Eventually destroys the turbo.
Fix: Always idle for 60 seconds before shutdown. Fit a turbo timer. Use quality synthetic oil.
medium
Timing belt (2L/3L)
Timing belt service interval is 100,000km. Belt failure = bent valves on these engines.
Fix: Replace on schedule with kit (belt, tensioner, water pump). Easy weekend DIY job.
low
King pin / front axle wear
Solid front axle king pins wear over time, causing vague steering.
Fix: King pin kit replacement. DIY-friendly with hand tools.

Pros
- Mechanical injection - no electronics
- Solid front axle on 4WD
- More displacement than 2L = stronger off-line
- Easy DIY rebuild
- Common engine - parts everywhere
Cons
- NA - still slow by modern standards
- Known for injector copper seal failure long-term
- Rust on body and chassis
- Timing belt at 100k mandatory
Known problems
high
Chassis rust
Common on examples used in coastal or wet conditions. Rear wheel arches, chassis rails, cab mounts. Can write off the truck.
Fix: Walk away from rusty examples. Treat dry-state examples with cavity wax and underbody coatings.
medium
3L injector copper seal failure
Copper washers at injector seat fail, allowing diesel to leak into engine oil over time. Dilutes oil, washes bores.
Fix: Replace injector seals as a set. Easy DIY job. Check oil level rising as warning sign.
medium
Timing belt (2L/3L)
Timing belt service interval is 100,000km. Belt failure = bent valves on these engines.
Fix: Replace on schedule with kit (belt, tensioner, water pump). Easy weekend DIY job.
low
King pin / front axle wear
Solid front axle king pins wear over time, causing vague steering.
Fix: King pin kit replacement. DIY-friendly with hand tools.
Common problems (all variants)
high
Chassis rust on coastal examples
Rear wheel arches, chassis rails, cab mounts. Can write off the truck. Worst on QLD coast and any examples used in coastal saltspray. Dry-state Vic/NSW interior examples hold up much better.
Fix: Walk away from heavily rusty examples. Treat dry-state examples with cavity wax and underbody coatings.
medium
Door bottom rust
Door bottoms rust from inside out due to blocked drain holes.
Fix: Clear door drains. Patch panels and respray if rusted through. Most have at least cosmetic rust by now.
