Overview

The 4th-generation Hilux (sold here as RN-series carb petrol, YN-series 4Y petrol and LN-series 2L/2L-T diesel) is the truck that built the Hilux's bulletproof legend in Australia. This is the generation that introduced the proper solid-front-axle dual-range 4WD in August 1983, turning the Hilux into a genuine compact 4x4 and the backbone of farm, mine and tradie fleets. Bodies came as single cab, Xtra Cab and dual cab, with cab-chassis and tray-back tradie versions everywhere. Mechanically it is old-school and honest: leaf springs all round (4x4s got front leaf and a solid axle), recirculating-ball steering, simple carburettor or mechanical-injection diesel engines and 4- or 5-speed manuals with the odd 4-speed auto. The engine you pick matters enormously. The 22R 2.4 carb petrol is a tough, easy-to-fix unit let down only by the 1983-on single-row timing chain and its plastic guides. The 4Y 2.2 petrol (from ~1985-86) is the lighter workhorse motor. The 2L 2.4 naturally-aspirated diesel is slow but extremely durable; the 2L-T turbo-diesel adds welcome torque but is infamous for cracking cylinder heads. After 35-40 years, condition, rust and service history matter far more than the badge - these are now appreciating 4x4 classics, but a rusty chassis or tired engine can be a money pit. Buy the best body you can find and assume a full consumables refresh.

Timing chain guide failure (single-row chain)
From 1983 the 22R used a single-row timing chain with plastic guides. As the chain stretches, the tensioner runs out of travel and the chain slaps the plastic guide, which cracks and disintegrates. A rattling/chattering noise on start-up is the warning. In the worst case the loose chain saws through the timing-cover water jacket and lets coolant into the sump, killing the engine.
Fix: Replace the timing chain, tensioner and guides - fit a double-row chain conversion or upgraded steel/metal-backed guides as the durable fix. Do not ignore start-up rattle.

Head gasket / overheating (iron block, alloy head)
The cast-iron block with aluminium head expands at different rates; a tired radiator, perished hoses or a failed thermostat can let it overheat and blow the head gasket or warp the head.
Fix: Keep the cooling system fresh - recore/replace radiator, new hoses, thermostat and water pump. Head gasket and skim if already compromised.

The 2L head can crack between valve seats if the engine is overheated (blocked radiator, low coolant) - less prone than the turbo 2L-T but still a known indirect-injection diesel weakness.

Cracked cylinder head
The 2L-T is notorious for cracking its cylinder head between the valve seats and pre-combustion chambers - the extra heat and cylinder pressure from the turbo, combined with any cooling-system weakness, causes overheating, coolant loss, white smoke and combustion gases in the coolant. Many enthusiasts steer clear of the 2L-T purely because of this.
Fix: Replace with a reconditioned head (uprated/repaired castings exist) and keep cooling immaculate - new radiator, fan, thermostat, coolant. Pressure-test the head and do a combustion-gas (block) test before buying.

The turbo bearings wear with age and heat; a hot shutdown without idle-down can coke the oil feed, leading to shaft play, smoke and lost boost.

Chassis and body rust
After 35-40 years, rust is the number-one killer of these Hiluxes. Hotspots include the chassis rails (especially around the rear leaf-spring hangers and shackles), cab mounts, door bottoms, windscreen surround, wheel arches and the tray/tub. Coastal and farm examples are the worst; QLD and coastal trucks need very careful inspection.
Fix: Thorough underbody and cab-mount inspection before purchase - probe with a screwdriver. Favour dry-state vehicles; treat survivors with cavity wax. Walk away from structural chassis rot unless you want a project.
