Timing belt neglect
Unlike the chain-driven petrols, the 2L diesel runs a rubber timing belt. A snapped belt on these can cause valve-to-piston damage, and decades-old belts of unknown age are a real risk.
Fix: Replace timing belt, tensioner and water pump on schedule (or immediately if history is unknown).

Chassis rust
Common on examples used in coastal or wet conditions. Rear wheel arches, chassis rails, cab mounts. Can write off the truck.
Fix: Walk away from rusty examples. Treat dry-state examples with cavity wax and underbody coatings.

Cylinder head cracking (overheat related)
The 2L head can crack between valve seats if the engine is overheated (blocked radiator, low coolant) - less prone than the turbo 2L-T but still a known indirect-injection diesel weakness.
Fix: Maintain cooling religiously; if cracked, replace/recondition the head. Pressure-test the head when buying.

Injection pump and injector wear
The mechanical injection pump and injectors wear at very high km, causing hard starting, white/black smoke and lost power.
Fix: Diesel-specialist pump and injector recondition; many examples have already had this done - ask for records.

King pin / front axle wear
Solid front axle king pins wear over time, causing vague steering.
Fix: King pin kit replacement. DIY-friendly with hand tools.
