Toyota A25A-FXS engine: known problems

The high-voltage cable running to the rear electric motor/components on 2019-2022 RAV4 hybrids is poorly protected and can corrode prematurely, eventually throwing hybrid-system faults. Toyota extended warranty cover on the cable in several markets (e.g. 8yr/160,000km) in response.

Early 2019-2020 hybrids share the 2.5 Dynamic Force engine-block porosity recall - the casting can crack and leak coolant, risking overheating.

Like all Toyota hybrids the high-voltage drive battery slowly loses capacity, eventually reducing EV assist and economy. Toyota's hybrid battery warranty (up to ~10 years with annual health checks) covers most cars, and real-world failures on this generation are rare and late, but it is the defining long-term cost of any used hybrid.

Campaign YGG39 (Oct 2023) addressed a driver-side airbag wiring-harness connection issue on 2023 Klugers that could prevent the airbag deploying, and the second-row recliner action also applies to hybrid grades.

A weak or flat 12V auxiliary battery is a common cause of multiple dash warnings, no-start ('READY' won't come on) and spurious hybrid-system errors on these cars, especially on low-mileage/short-trip use.

Same YGG74 recall as the V6 - the resin front lower bumper cover on 2021-23 Kluger Hybrid can detach at the mounting tabs after a minor impact.

The hybrid traction battery is very durable and warranted long-term, but at very high km/age capacity can fade, reducing EV assist and economy. Genuine failures within warranty age are rare on the XA50.
