Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.
High
Excessive oil consumption / cylinder-bore scoring (Theta II GDI)
The Series II 2.4 Theta II GDI shares the Nu GDI's reported excessive oil consumption and knocking from cylinder-bore scoring (piston-skirt contact opening bore clearances). Theta II has a chequered reliability record globally; AU-supplied engines were built in a different plant to the worst US cars but the issue and the Australian class action still apply.
Fix: Oil-consumption test, full service history check, and confirm any warranty engine work; budget for an engine on heavy oil-users. Walk away from knocking examples.
Listed for: Hyundai ix35 LM
High
Theta II connecting-rod bearing failure
The 2.4 Theta II family is subject to premature connecting-rod bearing wear linked to machining debris restricting oil passages and oil-flow inconsistency. Symptoms are an rpm-rising knock, oil-pressure and check-engine lights, power loss and vibration; severe failures can hole the block and create a fire risk. This drove a large multi-year Hyundai/Kia campaign and extended warranties overseas.
Fix: Engine replacement on failure. Check service history for the knock-sensor detection software update and any engine campaign; pre-purchase oil-pressure and cold-start listening; watch oil level.
Listed for: Hyundai Santa Fe DM
High
Theta II GDi oil consumption / engine knock and seizure
The Theta II GDi engine family is the subject of well-documented oil-consumption complaints and, in the worst cases, bearing knock and engine seizure - the issue behind US/Korea class actions, extended warranties and a knock-sensor detection software update on related engines. Worn rings or contaminated bearings cause rising consumption, ticking/knock and stalling.
Fix: Check oil level and listen for bottom-end knock on inspection; confirm any knock-sensor/ECU update and oil-consumption service history; insist on strict oil-change discipline. Walk away from any example with low oil and a ticking bottom end.
Listed for: Hyundai Santa Fe TM
Medium
Direct-injection intake-valve carbon (Series II GDI)
GDI carbon build-up on the intake valves over high km causes rough running and misfires, as on the 2.0 Nu.
Fix: Intake/walnut clean if symptomatic; quality fuel and regular oil changes help.
Listed for: Hyundai ix35 LM · Hyundai Santa Fe TM
Medium
Front suspension clunk / bush wear
The same front control-arm bush, strut-mount and sway-bar-link wear that afflicts the range, producing clunks and creaks over bumps.
Fix: Replace worn bushes/links/mounts and align; inspect on a hoist pre-purchase.
Listed for: Hyundai ix35 LM
Medium
Oil consumption
Some Theta II 2.4 engines consume oil noticeably between services, which both annoys and accelerates bearing wear if the level is allowed to drop.
Fix: Check and top up oil between services; investigate rings/PCV if consumption is heavy.
Listed for: Hyundai Santa Fe DM
Medium
Service-action software updates (Theta knock detection)
Theta II GDi engines were covered by software updates that monitor for the onset of bearing knock and can illuminate the engine light / enter limp mode to protect the engine before catastrophic failure.
Fix: Run the VIN through Hyundai for any outstanding engine service action / software update and confirm it has been applied.
Listed for: Hyundai Santa Fe TM
Low
Water pump / thermostat housing leaks
Water pump and thermostat-housing weeping are common cooling-system maintenance items on these engines.
Fix: Replace water pump and thermostat housing/gasket; refresh coolant.
Listed for: Hyundai Santa Fe DM
