Overview

The DM (third-gen, sometimes badged 'Santa Fe Series II' after the late-2015 facelift) was Australia's volume-selling medium-large SUV alternative to the Toyota Kluger and Mazda CX-9, and unlike most markets the AU DM was exclusively a seven-seater. It is a soft-roader monocoque crossover with on-demand AWD (or FWD) and no low range - a family wagon, not a serious off-roader. The lineup ran Active, Elite and Highlander grades. The vast majority sold were the 2.2L R-series D4HB turbo-diesel auto, which dominated the range; a 2.4L Theta II petrol (manual or auto, the cheap entry point) and a rare 3.3L Lambda II V6 petrol (FWD-only, the smoothest and arguably most reliable but very thirsty) round it out. Buy on history: the diesel's CP4 fuel system, DPF/EGR and a genuinely common rear-differential/AWD-coupling failure are the things that bite, while the 2.4 petrol carries Hyundai/Kia's Theta II rod-bearing reputation. A 2015-17 engine-bay fire recall (faulty electronics) and a 2018 steering-coupling recall also apply - confirm both are done.

Rear differential / AWD coupling failure
A genuinely common DM complaint: the rear differential and/or the electronic AWD coupling fails, with whine, vibration, banging and warning lights. Owners report bills from ~$3900 for a rear diff up to $8600+ when front and rear are both done, and isolated cases over $11,000. Often traced to a weak diff housing/coupling design and to running mismatched-wear or differently-sized tyres on the on-demand AWD.
Fix: Replace the rear diff / coupling unit. Pre-purchase: listen for driveline whine, rotate to identical tyres across all four corners, and budget for it on AWD examples.

Bosch CP4 pump / piezo injector failure (bad fuel)
The CP4 high-pressure pump and piezo injectors do not tolerate water-contaminated or poor-quality diesel; pump self-destruction can send metal debris through the whole common-rail system, requiring fuel-system replacement, not just the pump.
Fix: Use clean fuel, change filters on schedule, fit a quality pre-filter/water separator for rural/touring use. On failure, full fuel-system clean and replacement by a diesel specialist.

Theta II connecting-rod bearing failure
The 2.4 Theta II family is subject to premature connecting-rod bearing wear linked to machining debris restricting oil passages and oil-flow inconsistency. Symptoms are an rpm-rising knock, oil-pressure and check-engine lights, power loss and vibration; severe failures can hole the block and create a fire risk. This drove a large multi-year Hyundai/Kia campaign and extended warranties overseas.
Fix: Engine replacement on failure. Check service history for the knock-sensor detection software update and any engine campaign; pre-purchase oil-pressure and cold-start listening; watch oil level.
