Santa Fe DM inspection checklist

2012-2018 · 10 things to check before you buy, taken from this car's known problems.

highEngine-bay fire recall (2015-2017 electronics)

Look for: Around 8,700 DM Santa Fes (2015-17 build) were recalled in Australia over an engine-bay fire risk caused by a faulty circuit board/electrical component. Affected vehicles should have been rectified, but verify.

If you find it: Confirm the recall has been completed against the VIN at a Hyundai dealer.

Look for: A recall covered a steering-coupling concern (risk of steering separation). It must be confirmed complete before purchase.

highRear differential / AWD coupling failure

Look for: A genuinely common DM complaint: the rear differential and/or the electronic AWD coupling fails, with whine, vibration, banging and warning lights. Owners report bills from ~$3900 for a rear diff up to $8600+ when front and rear are both done, and isolated cases over $11,000. Often traced to a weak diff housing/coupling design and to running mismatched-wear or differently-sized tyres on the on-demand AWD.

If you find it: Replace the rear diff / coupling unit. Pre-purchase: listen for driveline whine, rotate to identical tyres across all four corners, and budget for it on AWD examples.

highBosch CP4 pump / piezo injector failure (bad fuel)

Look for: The CP4 high-pressure pump and piezo injectors do not tolerate water-contaminated or poor-quality diesel; pump self-destruction can send metal debris through the whole common-rail system, requiring fuel-system replacement, not just the pump.

If you find it: Use clean fuel, change filters on schedule, fit a quality pre-filter/water separator for rural/touring use. On failure, full fuel-system clean and replacement by a diesel specialist.

mediumDPF clogging and EGR valve carbon

Look for: The close-coupled DPF and the EGR valve/cooler soot up - the EGR commonly by around 100,000km - causing warning lights, limp mode and incomplete regens, especially on short urban-only trips.

If you find it: Regular highway runs to complete regens; EGR clean/replace; DPF clean or forced regen. Confirm no active DPF lights pre-purchase.

mediumHarmonic balancer / crank thrust and turbo actuator

Look for: Reported D4HB ancillary issues include harmonic-balancer (crank pulley) wear, crank thrust-bearing wear on manuals, and VGT turbo actuator sticking causing over/under-boost and power loss.

If you find it: Replace the harmonic balancer; inspect/clean or replace the VGT actuator; diesel-specialist diagnosis for boost faults.

2.4L Theta II petrol

highTheta II connecting-rod bearing failure

Look for: The 2.4 Theta II family is subject to premature connecting-rod bearing wear linked to machining debris restricting oil passages and oil-flow inconsistency. Symptoms are an rpm-rising knock, oil-pressure and check-engine lights, power loss and vibration; severe failures can hole the block and create a fire risk. This drove a large multi-year Hyundai/Kia campaign and extended warranties overseas.

If you find it: Engine replacement on failure. Check service history for the knock-sensor detection software update and any engine campaign; pre-purchase oil-pressure and cold-start listening; watch oil level.

mediumOil consumption

Look for: Some Theta II 2.4 engines consume oil noticeably between services, which both annoys and accelerates bearing wear if the level is allowed to drop.

If you find it: Check and top up oil between services; investigate rings/PCV if consumption is heavy.

mediumTiming chain components at high km

Look for: Occasional timing-chain guide/tensioner complications are reported at higher mileage, signalled by cold-start rattle.

If you find it: Investigate cold-start chain rattle; replace chain, guides and tensioners as a set if worn.

lowElectrical gremlins and warning lights

Look for: Assorted electrical faults - dash warning lights, sensors, infotainment and wiring niggles - are reported across the DM range.

If you find it: Scan for fault codes and address the specific sensor/module; verify all warning lights are off pre-purchase.

lowSuspension and wheel-bearing wear

Look for: Wheel bearings, control-arm bushes and links wear on a heavy seven-seat SUV, giving hums, clunks and uneven tyre wear.

If you find it: Replace worn bearings/bushes; wheel alignment after suspension work.

lowWater pump / thermostat housing leaks

Look for: Water pump and thermostat-housing weeping are common cooling-system maintenance items on these engines.

If you find it: Replace water pump and thermostat housing/gasket; refresh coolant.

Look for: Real-world 12-14 L/100km in a heavy seven-seater; not a fault but the trade-off for V6 smoothness.
