Known problems6

Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Timing belt neglect
The G6 is belt-driven, not chain-driven as some parts listings suggest. A snapped belt on a high-km bargain ute causes valve damage on an interference engine, and many cheap examples have unknown belt history.
Fix: Replace the timing belt, tensioner and water pump together if history is unknown; then keep to ~100,000km / 5 years.

High
Head gasket failure / warped head
Overheating from a tired cooling system can blow the head gasket and warp the alloy head - a documented G6 outcome.
Fix: Keep the cooling system fresh (radiator, thermostat, fan). Machine the head and replace the gasket if affected.
From 150k+ km · ~$1200-2500

High
Cylinder head warping / cracking after overheat
The 12-valve G6 head is known to warp, crack or 'go soft' if the engine is ever overheated (tired radiator, fan clutch, head-gasket weep). Symptoms: coolant loss, white exhaust, oil/coolant mixing, overheating under load.
Fix: Keep the cooling system fresh; address any overheat immediately. Repair = head skim or replacement and gasket; check the block for cracks.
From 150k+ km · ~$1200-3000
Listed for: Mazda Bravo (B-Series) UF / UN
High
Timing belt failure
Belt-driven engine; with most cars decades old and belt history unknown, a snapped belt can wreck valves.
Fix: Replace timing belt, tensioner and water pump together on purchase if records are missing; stick to the 100,000km interval.
From 100k+ km · ~$300-700
Listed for: Mazda Bravo (B-Series) UF / UN
Medium
Ignition / fuel delivery no-start and rough running
Aged distributor, cap, rotor, leads and idle/fuel components cause hard starting, rough idle and stalling on older G6 cars.
Fix: Refresh distributor cap/rotor/leads, clean the idle air and fuel system; check timing.
From 150k+ km · ~$200-700
Listed for: Ford Courier PC-PH
Low
Oil leaks and tired ancillaries
Rocker cover, front and rear main seals weep with age; distributor, hoses and engine mounts perish on these older petrol fours.
Fix: Reseal as needed; budget a consumables refresh on an older example.
