Overview

The Mazda Bravo is the Australian name for Mazda's B-Series ute, and across this long run it was effectively the same vehicle as the Ford Courier — Mazda and Ford co-developed and shared the platform, with the Bravo being the Mazda-badged version built in Japan. It spans two clearly different shapes: the older UF series (1985-1998, square-edged) and the more modern UN series (1998-2006, rounder, with the suicide-door 'Freestyle Cab' added). Engine choice drives the buying decision: the petrol 2.6L (G6/G6E) is the simple, durable workhorse motor most UF and UN Bravos carry; the UN B2500 diesel came as a gutless naturally aspirated WL and a much more useful turbo WL-T; and right at the end (2005-2006) a 4.0L Cologne V6 'B4000' arrived. The big caveats are well known in Australia: the WL/WL-T diesel head is prone to cracking at high km, all of these engines are timing-BELT driven (a snapped belt on these interference-risk motors is costly), and as old, hard-worked trade utes most have rust and tired leaf-sprung rear ends. A solid, honest budget 4x4 — not a Hilux for resale, but cheap to buy and simple to fix. Replaced by the BT-50 in late 2006.

Carburettor / fuel-mix issues (early carb cars)
Early carburetted F2 engines run rough, flat-spot or stall as the carb wears, jets gum up and the auto-choke ages. Hard hot starts and poor idle are common on neglected examples.
Fix: Carburettor rebuild/clean and tune by someone familiar with older Mazdas; fresh fuel lines and filter.

Cylinder head warping / cracking after overheat
The 12-valve G6 head is known to warp, crack or 'go soft' if the engine is ever overheated (tired radiator, fan clutch, head-gasket weep). Symptoms: coolant loss, white exhaust, oil/coolant mixing, overheating under load.
Fix: Keep the cooling system fresh; address any overheat immediately. Repair = head skim or replacement and gasket; check the block for cracks.

The WL diesel head develops hairline cracks at high km; it can pressure-test fine cold but open up hot, slowly burning coolant. Symptoms: gradual coolant loss, overheating, mayonnaise in the oil filler.
Fix: Pressure-test hot; replace or properly repair the head with a quality gasket. Keep the cooling system healthy to delay it.

WL-T heads are notorious for developing hairline cracks around 200,000km. They often pressure-test fine cold but open up once hot, slowly burning coolant. Watch for unexplained coolant loss, white smoke when warm, and oil/coolant contamination.

Not a fault, but a 4.0 petrol V6 in a heavy ute drinks 14-16+ L/100km, worse when towing. This is why they sell cheaply.

Rust is the number-one killer of old Bravos - cab corners, door bottoms, guards, tray/tub mounts, windscreen surround and the chassis rails on coastal or hard-worked examples. Plenty have been scrapped purely because the body rusted out while the driveline still ran.
Fix: Thorough pre-purchase underbody and cab inspection; favour dry-state (inland Vic/NSW/SA) examples. Cut-and-weld repairs plus cavity wax on anything worth saving.

The leaf-sprung rear sags and the leaves/shackles/bushes wear after years as a work ute, especially under tow-ball weight or constant loads.
