Bravo (B-Series)
Overview
The Mazda Bravo is the Australian name for Mazda's B-Series ute, and across this long run it was effectively the same vehicle as the Ford Courier — Mazda and Ford co-developed and shared the platform, with the Bravo being the Mazda-badged version built in Japan. It spans two clearly different shapes: the older UF series (1985-1998, square-edged) and the more modern UN series (1998-2006, rounder, with the suicide-door 'Freestyle Cab' added). Engine choice drives the buying decision: the petrol 2.6L (G6/G6E) is the simple, durable workhorse motor most UF and UN Bravos carry; the UN B2500 diesel came as a gutless naturally aspirated WL and a much more useful turbo WL-T; and right at the end (2005-2006) a 4.0L Cologne V6 'B4000' arrived. The big caveats are well known in Australia: the WL/WL-T diesel head is prone to cracking at high km, all of these engines are timing-BELT driven (a snapped belt on these interference-risk motors is costly), and as old, hard-worked trade utes most have rust and tired leaf-sprung rear ends. A solid, honest budget 4x4 — not a Hilux for resale, but cheap to buy and simple to fix. Replaced by the BT-50 in late 2006.
Engines & variants
2.2L F2 petrol (B2200)
Pros
- Dead-simple, cheap to run and fix
- Tough little workhorse four, plenty in wreckers
- Lightest and cheapest UF Bravo to buy
- No diesel complexity or turbo to worry about
Cons
- Underpowered, slow when loaded
- Carburettor examples need a tuner who knows them
- Only 2WD in most B2200 trims
- All examples are now very old and high-km
Known problems
2.6L G6/G6E petrol (B2600)
Pros
- The proven, simple Bravo workhorse engine
- More usable torque than the 2.2 and quieter than the diesel
- Available in 4x4 - a genuinely cheap budget tourer
- Cheap to buy and dirt-cheap parts
- No turbo, DPF or common-rail injectors to fail
Cons
- Thirsty for its size and modest power
- 12-valve head can warp/crack if overheated
- Lower resale than equivalent Hilux/Navara
- Most are tired ex-trade utes
Known problems
2.5L WL naturally aspirated diesel (B2500)
Pros
- Frugal and very simple mechanical diesel
- No turbo to fail, cheap and easy to service
- Same tough bottom end as the WL-T
- Long-legged and economical for light duties
Cons
- Genuinely slow and gutless, especially loaded or in 4x4
- Struggles to tow or climb at highway pace
- Same head-crack tendency as the WL-T
- Less desirable than the turbo - but cheaper
Known problems
2.5L WL-T turbo diesel (B2500)
Pros
- Far more usable than the NA diesel - good low-down torque
- Frugal for a 4x4 ute of the era
- Simple pre-common-rail diesel, no DPF or fragile high-pressure injectors
- The Bravo diesel most people actually want
- Cheap to buy as a budget tourer/work ute
Cons
- Head cracking is the well-known Achilles heel
- Only ever offered with a 5-speed manual
- Indirect-injection is noisier and less refined than rivals
- Hard-worked/towing examples cook the head sooner
Known problems
4.0L Cologne V6 petrol (B4000)
Pros
- Strong, smooth V6 - by far the most powerful Bravo
- Chain-driven timing (no belt to replace)
- Rare and the last/flagship Bravo before the BT-50
- Easy effortless towing and highway pace
- Shares the proven Ford Courier/Ranger V6 driveline
Cons
- Very thirsty - a petrol V6 in a heavy 4x4 ute
- Only sold for two years, so examples are scarce
- Auto can be sluggish and uses more fuel again
- Few buyers want petrol, so it sells cheap (good for buyers)
