Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.
Medium
DPF regeneration failure (urban use)
Like other GWM Cannon diesels, short urban trips prevent the diesel particulate filter completing regeneration, leading to a blocked DPF, warning lights, limp mode and excess fuel dilution of the oil.
Fix: Regular highway runs to allow passive/active regen; forced regen at dealer; software updates GWM issued in 2024 improved EGR/engine management. Severe cases need DPF clean or replacement.
Listed for: GWM Cannon Alpha 1st gen
Medium
EGR and intake carbon / engine management quirks
Early diesels showed EGR-related rough running and hesitation; GWM released engine-management software updates in 2024 specifically for the Cannon Alpha.
Fix: Ensure all dealer software updates and TSBs are applied; EGR/intake clean if carboned.
Listed for: GWM Cannon Alpha 1st gen
Medium
DPF soot loading on short trips
As a modern emissions diesel the GW4D24 has a diesel particulate filter that needs regular highway running to passively regenerate. Short, cold, low-speed urban-only use loads the DPF with soot, triggers forced regens and can raise back-pressure on the turbo and EGR over time.
Fix: Drive it on the highway regularly to allow regeneration; address active-regen warnings promptly. Not a city-only car.
Listed for: GWM Tank 300 1st gen
Medium
Throttle lag / low-rpm response
Reviewers describe genuinely frustrating lag off idle before the 1500rpm torque band arrives, with the 9-speed auto sometimes slow to respond in traffic. In its band there's real pull and it cruises well.
Fix: Latest dealer ECU/TCU calibration helps; otherwise an adaptive-driving trait rather than a fault.
Listed for: GWM Tank 300 1st gen
Medium
DPF regen issues
Some reports of failed regens.
Fix: Highway runs. Force regen at dealer.
Listed for: GWM Ute Cannon P01
Medium
Long-term reliability unknown
Insufficient data on 100k+ km units in Australian conditions.
Fix: Buy with warranty. Service religiously.
Listed for: GWM Ute Cannon P01
Low
Lack of usable power / payload vs claims
Owners report the diesel feels short on grunt when fully loaded or towing near the 3500kg limit, and the heavy kerb weight limits real payload.
Fix: Drive within real limits; aftermarket tuning gains are modest and may affect warranty.
Listed for: GWM Cannon Alpha 1st gen
Low
EGR / intake soot build-up (projected)
Common-rail diesels with EGR accumulate soot in the intake over time, especially on stop-start duty; too new in Australia to be widely confirmed but a known class issue.
Fix: Keep up servicing and highway running; intake/EGR clean if airflow-related symptoms appear.
Listed for: GWM Tank 300 1st gen
