Overview

Ford's globally-engineered C-platform soft-roader, sold here first as the Kuga TF (badged Kuga, 2012-2016) and then rebranded the Escape ZG (2017-2020) after Ford retired the old Mazda-based Escape name. AU cars were European-built (Valencia, Spain). Trims ran Ambiente, Trend and Titanium, FWD or on-demand AWD. The 2012 TF1 launch car was a one-year-only 2.5L five-cylinder turbo petrol; the volume range from 2013 was the 1.6 EcoBoost (later 1.5 EcoBoost), the hot 2.0 EcoBoost, and a 2.0 TDCi Duratorq turbo-diesel. It drives sharply and is well-equipped, but reliability is the catch: the 1.6 EcoBoost was subject to a coolant-loss/engine-fire recall, the small EcoBoost engines use a maintenance-critical 'wet' timing belt and have a documented coolant-intrusion/cracked-head pattern, and the diesel carries the usual DPF/EGR baggage. Note the diesel's wet-clutch 6DCT450 PowerShift is a DIFFERENT, far more robust unit than the troubled dry-clutch DPS6 in the Focus/Fiesta class action - don't confuse the two. Buy on service history and recall completion, not on badge.

The wet-clutch 6DCT450 is far more durable than the dry-clutch DPS6, but neglected fluid changes lead to clutch pack and mechatronic wear, causing jerky shifts or fault codes.

Lack of coolant circulation can cause the 1.6 EcoBoost to overheat, crack the cylinder head and leak pressurised oil onto hot surfaces - a fire risk. Ford recalled ~4,450 AU Kugas (2013-2014) plus Fiesta STs after several fires. If the recall work was skipped and the engine overheated, the head/engine can be ruined.
Fix: Confirm the recall (coolant/overheat campaign) has been completed; walk away from any car showing overheating history or a replaced head without records.

Wet (belt-in-oil) timing belt degradation
The 1.6 EcoBoost uses a belt-in-oil drive. The belt sheds rubber as it ages, contaminating oil, clogging the oil pump pickup and risking timing skip and catastrophic engine damage if not replaced on time.
Fix: Replace the wet belt at or before the recommended interval (do not stretch it); use the correct oil and stick to short change intervals.
