Falcon Ute
Overview
A 23-year run of rear-drive Aussie workhorse utes built on the long-wheelbase Falcon commercial platform: leaf-sprung live rear axle, separate-ish body, and an engine bay that has held everything from a carby crossflow six to a Cleveland and Windsor V8. There were three broad eras. The XD-XE-XF (1979-1993) used carburetted 3.3 and 4.1 'crossflow' sixes (the 4.1 got Bosch then EEC-IV EFI options late in the XE/XF) plus optional 4.9/5.8 Cleveland V8s early on; these are now genuine classics and rust and tired mechanicals matter more than spec. The XG-XH (1993-1999) brought the modern 4.0 SOHC EFI six (the 'Intech' precursor) and a hotter XR6. The AU (1999-2002) modernised the cab, ran the 4.0 Intech SOHC six, an Intech VCT XR6, a dedicated E-Gas LPG six, and the 5.0 Windsor V8 in XR8. These are cheap, simple, parts-everywhere utes; pick a rust-free body and a sound driveline and they tow and work hard for little money. The crossflow six is bulletproof but slow and thirsty; the 4.0 SOHC has well-known coil-pack, gasket and cooling o-ring niggles; the AU's biggest enemy is body/chassis rust. Always inspect the chassis rails, cab corners and tray mounts before anything else.

3.3L 200 crossflow six (carb)
Pros
- Dead-simple OHV six - anyone can work on it
- Cheapest XD-XF commercial to buy and run
- Parts everywhere and very cheap
- Tough bottom end if oil changes were kept up
Cons
- Genuinely gutless - the 4.1 is the one to have
- Carby tuning and choke gremlins on tired examples
- Pre-1986 engines have softer valve seats (leaded-fuel era)
- Thirsty for the performance offered
Known problems
4.1L 250 crossflow six (carb / EFI)
Pros
- The classic Aussie work six - torquey and unburstable
- Tows well for its age; loved by old-school towers
- Late XF EFI (EEC-IV) versions run far cleaner and start easier
- Cheap, simple, parts everywhere
- Easy to mod (extractors, carb, head work)
Cons
- Thirsty, especially the carby versions
- Carby tune drift on tired examples
- Pre-1986 valve seat softness on leaded-era heads
- Performance is modest by modern standards
Known problems
4.9L / 5.8L Cleveland V8 (XD-XE)
Pros
- Genuine Aussie Cleveland V8 grunt and character
- Strong torque for towing and load
- Collectible now - desirable in a ute
- Simple pushrod design, well supported by the aftermarket
Cons
- Very thirsty
- Only offered early (V8 dropped during the XE run, mid-1982)
- Genuine V8 utes are rare and command big premiums
- Leaded-fuel-era, runs hot if cooling is tired

4.0L SOHC EFI six (XG-XH)
Pros
- Big jump in refinement and power over the crossflow
- Strong low-down torque, tows well
- EFI - reliable starting and driveability
- Cheap to buy and run, parts plentiful
- XR6 (161kW) adds a sportier edge
Cons
- Cooling system o-rings and gaskets age out
- Coil/ignition niggles as they get older
- Still a fairly thirsty 4.0 six
- XG-XH cabs more dated than the AU

4.0L Intech SOHC six (AU, petrol)
Pros
- Strong, torquey six with good driveability
- Modernised AU cab and ergonomics
- Very cheap to buy now with parts everywhere
- Tows and works hard for little money
- BTR 4-speed auto or T5 manual both well supported
Cons
- Head gasket and cooling o-ring issues if neglected
- Coil pack / ignition lead misfires with age
- AU bodies/chassis rust is the real concern
- Series 1 styling and brake-disc warping criticised
Known problems
4.0L Intech VCT six (AU XR6)
Pros
- Tickford-developed VCT adds noticeably more punch
- Sportier XR6 spec - better brakes, seats, suspension
- Same robust 4.0 architecture, parts everywhere
- Most desirable AU ute six - holds value better
Cons
- Shares the AU head gasket / cooling o-ring weaknesses
- Coil pack / lead misfires with age
- VCT phaser can rattle on cold start if oil/maintenance neglected
- AU rust applies the same as any other
Known problems
4.0L Intech E-Gas dedicated LPG (AU)
Pros
- Factory-engineered dedicated LPG - cheap to run on gas
- Hardened valve seats from factory for LPG (unlike DIY conversions)
- Popular ex-fleet/tradie ute - very cheap to buy
- Same tough 4.0 bottom end
Cons
- Less power and slightly thirstier than petrol on energy basis
- Tank robs some tray/under-body space and adds weight
- Gas-system components (converter, mixer, locks) age and need servicing
- Diminishing LPG availability in some areas now
Known problems
5.0L Windsor V8 (AU XR8)
Pros
- Effortless Windsor V8 torque and sound
- XR8 ute is desirable and holds value
- Robust pushrod V8, huge aftermarket support
- Better brakes/suspension in XR spec
Cons
- Thirsty compared to the six
- Higher purchase and running cost than six-cylinder utes
- Shares AU body/chassis rust risk
- Earlier Windsor is less powerful than later BA Boss V8s
