Overview

A 23-year run of rear-drive Aussie workhorse utes built on the long-wheelbase Falcon commercial platform: leaf-sprung live rear axle, separate-ish body, and an engine bay that has held everything from a carby crossflow six to a Cleveland and Windsor V8. There were three broad eras. The XD-XE-XF (1979-1993) used carburetted 3.3 and 4.1 'crossflow' sixes (the 4.1 got Bosch then EEC-IV EFI options late in the XE/XF) plus optional 4.9/5.8 Cleveland V8s early on; these are now genuine classics and rust and tired mechanicals matter more than spec. The XG-XH (1993-1999) brought the modern 4.0 SOHC EFI six (the 'Intech' precursor) and a hotter XR6. The AU (1999-2002) modernised the cab, ran the 4.0 Intech SOHC six, an Intech VCT XR6, a dedicated E-Gas LPG six, and the 5.0 Windsor V8 in XR8. These are cheap, simple, parts-everywhere utes; pick a rust-free body and a sound driveline and they tow and work hard for little money. The crossflow six is bulletproof but slow and thirsty; the 4.0 SOHC has well-known coil-pack, gasket and cooling o-ring niggles; the AU's biggest enemy is body/chassis rust. Always inspect the chassis rails, cab corners and tray mounts before anything else.

The number-one buying concern across all three eras. Rust attacks door bottoms, cab corners, windscreen and rear-window surrounds, chassis rails, engine-bay seams, tray/tub mounts and panel-van rear quarters. AU clear-coat peeling is also common. Coastal and hard-worked examples can be rusted beyond economic repair.
Fix: Thorough pre-purchase rust inspection of chassis rails, cab corners and tray mounts; favour dry-state, garaged examples. Treat sound cars with cavity wax.
