Overview

A rebadged Isuzu Trooper (UBS), sold here as a genuine ladder-frame, dual-range part-time 4WD wagon in SE, Monterey and LS-style trims across two distinct phases. Phase 1 (1992-Feb 1998) ran the simple, tough single-cam 6VD1 3.2 V6 petrol and the old-school 4JG2 3.1 indirect-injection turbo-diesel. Phase 2 (Feb 1998-2004) brought the quad-cam 6VE1 3.5 V6 petrol and - crucially - the 4JX1 3.0 'DiTD' turbo-diesel, an advanced-for-its-time engine using a HEUI (hydraulically-actuated electronic unit injector) system driven by a second oil pump. The 4JX1 is the engine that defines the car's reputation: when well looked after and run on the correct oil it is strong, but injector-sleeve/O-ring failures let diesel into the oil (and sometimes coolant into the fuel), glow plugs can break and drop debris into the cylinders, and a porous/cracked alloy head is common. There was a factory recall over injector seals on early (1998-2000) diesels. Specialists who can properly fix a 4JX1 are scarce and expensive, so a tired diesel can be uneconomic. The petrols and the older 4JG2 diesel are far simpler. Capable, comfortable and cheap to buy, but engine history and a compression/oil-level check matter more on a Jackaroo than on almost any rival - buy the best-documented example you can find.

The quad-cam 6VE1 uses a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule (and the tensioner with it); an overdue belt is a real engine-damage risk on this interference design.

Injector sleeve / O-ring failure - diesel in the oil
The HEUI injectors sit in sleeves sealed by O-rings; when these fail, diesel leaks into the oil and the sump level rises. This dilutes the oil that also actuates the injectors, causing rough running and, in the worst case, runaway/involuntary running. A factory recall covered early (1998-2000) injector seals.
Fix: Address any rise in sump oil level immediately - replace injector sleeves/O-rings and injectors as needed; confirm the recall work was done before buying.
