Overview

The seven-seat wagon spin-off of the RT D-Max ute - same ladder chassis and 3.0L 4JJ1 diesel, in a family body sold as LS-M, LS-U and LS-T. Australia got the 3.0 diesel only, with a 5-speed auto early and a 6-speed auto from the 2017 facelift (which also lifted torque). Honest, durable and cheap to run, the 4JJ1's block/crank/timing-chain bottom end is genuinely tough - the issues are all in the bolt-on emissions and fuel ancillaries, and short-trip city use is its enemy.

Pros

  • Extremely tough bottom end - 300k-400k km with care
  • Simple, cheap to run and service
  • Strong low-down torque, good economy
  • Shares huge D-Max parts/aftermarket support

Cons

  • EGR clogging is common and not cheap when stuck
  • DPF hates short urban-only trips (limp mode)
  • Injectors wear beyond ~150k km
  • Modest power vs newer rivals

Known problems

medium
EGR valve / intake clogging
Soot mixed with crankcase oil fumes clogs the EGR valve and coats the inlet manifold, narrowing it - causing poor starting, power loss, rough idle and worse economy. A stuck valve runs about $1500 to replace.
Fix: Clean EGR and intake; fit a catch-can to slow buildup; replace the valve if seized.
From 80k+ km · ~$300-1500
medium
DPF soot loading on short trips
Used mainly for short city trips the DPF can't passively regenerate; soot builds and triggers limp mode, eventually needing forced regen, cleaning or replacement.
Fix: Drive 80km/h+ for 20-30 minutes weekly to allow passive regen; clean/replace DPF if loaded.

medium
Injector wear
Common-rail injectors wear beyond ~150k km - rough idle, misfire, white smoke on startup, worse economy.
Fix: Injector test and replacement; quality fuel and filtration extend life.
From 150k+ km · ~$1500-3000

Common problems (all variants)

low
Front suspension / ball joints (off-road use)
Front ball joints and bushes wear with km and rough-road use.
Fix: Replace worn components; wheel alignment after.
From 120k+ km · ~$300-800
low
Brake wear (towing / heavy use)
A loaded 7-seat wagon wears front brakes, especially towing.
Fix: Quality pads/rotors; towing-spec pads for tow duty.
From 60k+ km · ~$300-700
low
Coastal rust / underbody
Coastal and beach-driven examples can show underbody and tailgate corrosion.
Fix: Underbody inspection pre-purchase; wash down after beach use.
