Overview

The JL replaced the JK in Australia from 2019 and is sold as Sport S, Overland and Rubicon, in 2-door and the far more popular 4-door Unlimited (JLU) body. It is one of the few remaining true ladder-frame, dual-range, solid-axle 4WD wagons - genuinely capable off-road, especially the Rubicon with its factory front and rear lockers, electronic sway-bar disconnect and 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case. The Australian engine line-up is the 3.6L Pentastar V6 petrol (the mainstay across the whole run), a 2.2L Multijet II turbo-diesel offered roughly 2019-2021 (mainly Rubicon and Overland), and the 2.0L GME turbo petrol with eTorque mild-hybrid added later on higher grades. The 4xe plug-in hybrid was NOT sold in Australia (left-hand-drive only), so it is intentionally excluded here. Buy a Wrangler for what it is - charismatic, removable-roof, hugely capable - not for reliability: the JL has well-documented 'death wobble' front-end behaviour, Pentastar oil-cooler/filter-housing leaks, stop-start auxiliary-battery gremlins, water ingress and electrical niggles. Jeep's patchy reliability and resale reputation in Australia is why this sits as a 'warn' tier - desirable, but go in with eyes open and a strong warranty/PPI.

Pros

  • Proven, widely used Pentastar V6 - the AU mainstay engine
  • No DPF/diesel after-treatment complexity
  • Available with a 6-speed manual (the only way to get a manual JL here)
  • Strong, smooth power and a good off-road torque spread
  • Simpler and cheaper to fix than the diesel when things go wrong

Cons

  • Thirsty for its size, especially around town and when towing
  • Plastic oil-cooler/filter housing is a known leak point
  • Rocker-arm/lifter wear can develop at higher km
  • Modest torque next to a turbo-diesel for heavy touring loads

Oil-cooler / oil-filter housing leak
The Pentastar's plastic oil-cooler/filter-housing assembly becomes brittle and leaks oil (and sometimes coolant) down the back of the engine onto the bellhousing - one of the most common Pentastar complaints.
Fix: Replace the housing (aftermarket alloy units exist) with new O-rings; address early before oil contaminates other components.

Rocker-arm / lifter tick and failure
Pentastar rocker arms/lifters can wear and fail, causing a tick, misfire codes and a check-engine light; in bad cases the cam and valvetrain need work on one or both heads.

The JL's solid front axle can develop violent steering-wheel oscillation ('death wobble') triggered by a bump at speed, caused by worn or under-torqued track bar, ball joints, tie-rod ends, control-arm bushes or steering damper. Alarming but usually fixable.
Fix: Inspect and re-torque/replace track bar, ball joints, tie-rod ends and damper; upgraded aftermarket track bar/steering links are a common permanent fix. Address before bolt holes wear oval.

With its removable roof and doors, the Wrangler is prone to water ingress around the door seals, freedom-top panels, windscreen frame and footwells in heavy rain or at the car wash.
