Overview

The classic, ladder-frame, leaf-from-its-roots Defender — full-time 4WD with a lockable centre diff and the LT230 dual-range transfer case, live beam axles front and rear, and a body of riveted/bonded aluminium panels over a steel chassis and steel bulkhead. Sold in Australia in 90 (short-wheelbase), 110 (long-wheelbase wagon/ute) and 130 (extended cab-chassis) forms. Engine history defines the buying decision: the mechanical, belt-driven 200Tdi (1992-1994) and 300Tdi (1994-1998) are the simplest and most owner-serviceable; the electronic five-cylinder Td5 (1999-2007) is more refined but is notorious for plastic-dowel head-gasket failure; the Ford-sourced 2.4 (2007-2011) and 2.2 (2012-2016) Puma TDCi engines are the most car-like to drive but bring the MT82 gearbox spline-wear and clutch worries. Across every engine the real enemy is corrosion — the steel bulkhead, chassis rails, rear crossmember and outriggers rot, and rebuilds/galvanised-chassis swaps are common. Immense character, huge aftermarket and genuine off-road ability, but it is an old-school, high-maintenance vehicle and parity-grade rust/driveline inspection before purchase is non-negotiable. Aluminium-panel Defenders also have strong appreciating values, especially clean Td5 and late Puma examples.

Timing belt failure
The 200Tdi runs a rubber timing belt that must be replaced on a strict interval. A neglected or contaminated belt can jump or snap, and the engine is an interference design so valves contact pistons - a major rebuild.
Fix: Replace the belt with tensioner on schedule, fit the later uprated tensioner kit, and confirm documented history before buying.

Cylinder head cracking / gasket from overheating
A tired radiator, viscous fan or blocked cooling system lets the head overheat, cracking it or blowing the gasket. The alloy head is sensitive to neglected coolant.
Fix: Keep the cooling system fresh (radiator, fan, coolant, thermostat); skim or replace the head and use a quality gasket if it has cooked.

Early timing-belt failure (1994-1996)
Early 300Tdi engines suffered premature timing-belt and tensioner wear; Land Rover issued an uprated belt/tensioner kit (STC4095K/STC4096K) for affected VIN ranges. A failed belt destroys the interference engine.
Fix: Fit the uprated belt and tensioner kit, replace on a conservative 60,000km/5-year interval, and verify it has been done.

Head-gasket failure from plastic locating dowels
Land Rover located the head with plastic dowels that degrade and let the head shift under thermal load, blowing the gasket - the classic and expensive Td5 failure. Even minor overheating can trigger it.
Fix: Replace gasket and fit metal dowels, pressure-test/skim the head and renew head bolts. Many sound examples have already had this done - demand records.
