Defender
Overview
The classic, ladder-frame, leaf-from-its-roots Defender — full-time 4WD with a lockable centre diff and the LT230 dual-range transfer case, live beam axles front and rear, and a body of riveted/bonded aluminium panels over a steel chassis and steel bulkhead. Sold in Australia in 90 (short-wheelbase), 110 (long-wheelbase wagon/ute) and 130 (extended cab-chassis) forms. Engine history defines the buying decision: the mechanical, belt-driven 200Tdi (1992-1994) and 300Tdi (1994-1998) are the simplest and most owner-serviceable; the electronic five-cylinder Td5 (1999-2007) is more refined but is notorious for plastic-dowel head-gasket failure; the Ford-sourced 2.4 (2007-2011) and 2.2 (2012-2016) Puma TDCi engines are the most car-like to drive but bring the MT82 gearbox spline-wear and clutch worries. Across every engine the real enemy is corrosion — the steel bulkhead, chassis rails, rear crossmember and outriggers rot, and rebuilds/galvanised-chassis swaps are common. Immense character, huge aftermarket and genuine off-road ability, but it is an old-school, high-maintenance vehicle and parity-grade rust/driveline inspection before purchase is non-negotiable. Aluminium-panel Defenders also have strong appreciating values, especially clean Td5 and late Puma examples.

2.5L 200Tdi turbo diesel
Pros
- Simple, fully mechanical injection - no engine electronics to fail
- The first direct-injection Land Rover diesel; willing and economical for its era
- Easy and cheap to work on, strong parts support
- Genuinely tough bottom end when cooling and oil are maintained
Cons
- Slow by modern standards, especially loaded or towing
- Timing belt is a strict scheduled item - failure bends valves
- Earliest and now very high-km AU Defenders
- Noisy, agricultural, basic cabin
Known problems
2.5L 300Tdi turbo diesel
Pros
- The sweet-spot classic Defender engine - mechanical, simple, durable
- Smoother and quieter than the 200Tdi with the same easy serviceability
- Excellent parts and aftermarket support, easy DIY
- No engine electronics; strong off-grid touring choice
Cons
- Still slow and noisy by modern standards
- Early engines had a documented timing-belt failure problem (recall kit issued)
- Belt remains a strict scheduled replacement
- All AU examples are now old and high-km
Known problems
2.5L Td5 turbo diesel (5-cyl)
Pros
- Smoother, stronger and more refined than the Tdi engines
- Chain-driven timing - no timing belt to schedule
- More torque (300Nm) makes touring and towing easier
- Well supported, tuneable, and reliable once known faults are addressed
Cons
- Plastic head-locating dowels cause head-gasket failure - the signature Td5 fault
- Adds engine electronics (ECU, MAF, injector harness) the Tdi lacks
- Injector wiring-harness oil-wicking and fuel-pump/regulator issues
- More complex to diagnose than the mechanical diesels
Known problems
2.4L Puma TDCi turbo diesel
Pros
- Far more torque (360Nm) and a 6-speed gearbox - the most usable classic Defender on-road
- Common-rail refinement and a proper modern dash/heater
- No DPF on AU 2.4 (EU4) - simpler after-treatment than the 2.2
- Solid-mass flywheel (no DMF) and strong Ford engine internals
Cons
- MT82 gearbox output-shaft spline wear can cause loss of drive
- Clutch life is often short (50,000-70,000km) and labour-intensive to replace
- Turbo boost hoses tear/burst - common limp-mode cause
- Soft P38-type diffs less robust than older Salisbury units under heavy load

2.2L Puma TDCi turbo diesel
Pros
- Same strong 360Nm output as the 2.4 with cleaner emissions
- The final and most refined classic Defender - rising collector values
- Modern common-rail driveability and a 6-speed gearbox
- Identical heavy parts/aftermarket support to the 2.4
Cons
- Shares the MT82 spline-wear and short-clutch-life worries with the 2.4
- Where fitted, the DPF dislikes short urban trips
- Still an old-platform, agricultural drive despite the modern engine
- Premium prices for final-edition examples
