highChassis rust - rear crossmember, outriggers and rails

Look for: The steel ladder chassis rots at the rear crossmember, outriggers and around the rear of the rails, especially on coastal, beach-driven or hard-worked examples. Severe cases need crossmember/outrigger replacement or a full galvanised chassis swap.

If you find it: Detailed underbody inspection pre-purchase; repair sections or fit a galvanised replacement chassis. Favour dry-climate, rust-free vehicles.

highSteel bulkhead corrosion

Look for: The steel bulkhead (firewall) rots from the inside out around the footwells, door pillars and vent/windscreen areas where water collects and cannot drain. Bubbling paint at the top corners is a tell-tale sign; replacement is a major job.

If you find it: Inspect footwells, A-pillar feet and vents closely; repair or replace the bulkhead (galvanised replacements available).

mediumDoor and body water leaks

Look for: Classic Defenders are notorious for leaking around doors, windscreen and roof seams, wetting footwells and accelerating bulkhead rust and electrical faults.

If you find it: Renew door and screen seals, clear drains, and address leaks early to protect the bulkhead and wiring.

mediumFront swivel-hub / wheel-bearing wear and oil leaks

Look for: The live-axle front swivel hubs weep oil/grease and the swivel balls pit, contaminating bearings and CVs; wheel bearings and steering joints also wear with km and off-road use.

If you find it: Reseal and repack the swivels, replace pitted swivel balls, renew wheel bearings and steering joints together.

highTiming belt failure

Look for: The 200Tdi runs a rubber timing belt that must be replaced on a strict interval. A neglected or contaminated belt can jump or snap, and the engine is an interference design so valves contact pistons - a major rebuild.

If you find it: Replace the belt with tensioner on schedule, fit the later uprated tensioner kit, and confirm documented history before buying.

2.5L 200Tdi turbo diesel

highCylinder head cracking / gasket from overheating

Look for: A tired radiator, viscous fan or blocked cooling system lets the head overheat, cracking it or blowing the gasket. The alloy head is sensitive to neglected coolant.

If you find it: Keep the cooling system fresh (radiator, fan, coolant, thermostat); skim or replace the head and use a quality gasket if it has cooked.

2.5L 300Tdi turbo diesel

highOverheating / head gasket if cooling neglected

Look for: Like the 200Tdi, the alloy head is intolerant of overheating; a worn radiator, fan or worked-hard engine can blow the gasket or warp the head.

If you find it: Maintain cooling system; pressure-test and skim/replace head with a quality gasket if cooked.

2.5L Td5 turbo diesel (5-cyl)

highHead-gasket failure from plastic locating dowels

Look for: Land Rover located the head with plastic dowels that degrade and let the head shift under thermal load, blowing the gasket - the classic and expensive Td5 failure. Even minor overheating can trigger it.

If you find it: Replace gasket and fit metal dowels, pressure-test/skim the head and renew head bolts. Many sound examples have already had this done - demand records.

mediumInjector wiring-harness oil contamination

Look for: Engine oil wicks up the injector loom into the ECU connector, causing misfires, poor running and starting faults.

If you find it: Fit the updated/repaired injector harness and reseal the connector; clean the ECU plug.

From 120k+ km · ~$300-800

mediumFuel pump / pressure regulator (FPR) and oil pump bolt

Look for: In-tank fuel pump and fuel-pressure regulator faults cause cutting out and hard starting; the oil-pump bolt is also a known failure point that can cause catastrophic damage if it backs out.

If you find it: Replace FPR/pump as needed; check and Loctite/upgrade the oil-pump bolt as preventive maintenance.

2.4L Puma TDCi turbo diesel

highMT82 gearbox output-shaft spline wear

Look for: The splines coupling the MT82 six-speed to the transfer case can wear due to marginal lubrication, eventually causing a loss of drive.

If you find it: Inspect/repair the output shaft and transfer-case input coupling; some fit improved lubrication mods. Check for drivetrain clunk pre-purchase.

mediumClutch wear and failure

Look for: The clutch on the TDCi Defenders is short-lived and the job is labour-heavy (gearbox/transfer removal).

If you find it: Quality clutch kit; combine with any gearbox/spline work to save labour.

From 50k-70k km · ~$1500-2800

mediumTurbo boost hose / intercooler pipe failure

Look for: Boost hoses (often the left-side turbo hose) tear or pop off, throwing the engine into limp mode with sudden power loss.

If you find it: Replace with uprated silicone hoses and quality clamps; inspect intercooler piping.

2.2L Puma TDCi turbo diesel

highMT82 gearbox spline wear / loss of drive

Look for: Carries the 2.4's MT82 output-shaft spline-wear issue, which can lead to a sudden loss of drive between gearbox and transfer case.

If you find it: Inspect and repair the output shaft/transfer coupling; listen for drivetrain clunk and check service history.

From 100k+ km · ~$1500-4000

mediumClutch failure

Look for: Like the 2.4, the clutch is a wear item with a short life and heavy labour to replace.

If you find it: Fit a quality clutch; do any gearbox work at the same time.

From 50k-70k km · ~$1500-2800

mediumDPF clogging on short trips (where fitted)

Look for: DPF-equipped 2.2s won't passively regenerate on short, low-speed driving, leading to soot loading, forced regens and back-pressure.

If you find it: Regular highway runs to allow regen; clean or replace the DPF if blocked and confirm regen behaviour.

lowDriveline vibration / worn UJs and slip joints

Look for: Propshaft universal joints, the front-prop slip joint and the rubber-coupled rear prop wear, causing vibration and clunk - common on the live-axle, full-time 4WD driveline.

If you find it: Replace UJs and service/grease the slip joints; upgraded wide-angle props are common for lifted vehicles.

lowBrake and axle-seal wear (heavy live-axle vehicle)

Look for: Heavy kerb weight and towing wear brakes quickly; rear axle and hub seals can leak onto brakes, and brake balance suffers if neglected.

If you find it: Quality pads/discs, renew leaking hub/axle seals, and service the brake hydraulics.

From 80k+ km · ~$300-900

lowFront crank oil seal / oil leaks

Look for: Front crankshaft seal and general engine oil weeps are common, and oil contamination shortens timing-belt life.

If you find it: Replace the front seal (ideally with the timing belt) and address leaks promptly.

lowOil leaks and tired ancillaries

Look for: Front/rear crank seals, rocker cover and general weeps are normal at age, along with perished hoses and tired injectors/pump on neglected examples.

If you find it: Reseal as needed; diesel-specialist refresh of pump/injectors if smoky or hard-starting.
