Overview

Mazda's light crossover, built on the DJ Mazda2 platform and sold in Australia from early 2015 across Neo, Maxx, sTouring, Maxx Sport, Akari and special editions. It is a monocoque on-road soft-roader - low ground clearance, mostly front-wheel drive, with optional on-demand i-ACTIV AWD on the higher grades and the diesel. Mechanically it is a smart used buy because it avoids the dual-clutch and CVT gremlins that plague rivals: every CX-3 uses a conventional torque-converter 6-speed auto (or a 6-speed manual on early cars), and the petrol is a timing-chain naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G. The volume engine in Australia is the 2.0L SkyActiv-G (PE-VPS, 110kW/195Nm); a 1.5L SkyActiv-D twin-cam turbo-diesel (S5-DPTS, 77kW/270Nm) was offered from 2015 but sold poorly and was quietly dropped around 2018, so diesels are rare and need extra scrutiny. The diesel is the one to be cautious about - it was subject to a serious 'engine over-run / self-destruct' recall and shares the SkyActiv-D family's DPF, intake-coking and oil-dilution tendencies on short city trips. Across the range the well-known issues are minor: a large reversing-camera wiring recall, a fuel-pump impeller recall on 2017-2019 builds, an engine over-run PCM recall, MZD Connect infotainment glitches, thin/easily-chipped paint, a tight rear seat and small boot, and Takata airbag recalls on early cars. Note the 2.0 was lightly revised over the years (later cars are quoted around 109kW/192Nm with cylinder-deactivation on some) - don't read minor spec differences as different engines.

Pros

Engine over-run / uncontrolled high-RPM (oil-draw) recall
If the engine is revved hard in Park/Neutral, residual oil accumulating in the intake can be drawn in, causing the engine to run away at high RPM until it is damaged or destroyed. The subject of an Australian recall requiring a revised PCM calibration.
Fix: Confirm the PCM recalibration recall was completed via VIN; have it done free at a Mazda dealer if outstanding.

Fuel-pump impeller failure (2017-2019 recall)
A defective low-pressure fuel-pump impeller can crack and swell, causing rough running, stalling or a no-start. Part of a large Mazda recall covering ~90,000 Australian vehicles including the CX-3.
Fix: Check the fuel-pump recall is complete; replace the in-tank pump if symptomatic and not covered.
