highTakata airbag recall (early cars)

Look for: Like most cars of the era, early CX-3s were caught in the industry-wide Takata airbag inflator recall, where ageing inflators can rupture and fire shrapnel.

If you find it: Verify the Takata airbag recall has been completed; do not drive an affected unrectified car - rectification is free.

mediumReversing-camera wiring recall

Look for: A very large Australian recall (over 176,000 Mazda vehicles including the CX-3) covered a wiring problem that could disable or disrupt the reversing-camera display - a reversing-safety concern.

If you find it: Confirm the reversing-camera wiring recall has been completed via VIN; have it rectified free if outstanding.

mediumFront suspension joint / fastener recall

Look for: The DK CX-3 was subject to a recall involving a front suspension joint/fastener that could loosen or fail, potentially affecting handling.

If you find it: Run the VIN through Mazda / Product Safety recall checks and confirm the suspension recall was completed.

2.0L SkyActiv-G petrol

highEngine over-run / uncontrolled high-RPM (oil-draw) recall

Look for: If the engine is revved hard in Park/Neutral, residual oil accumulating in the intake can be drawn in, causing the engine to run away at high RPM until it is damaged or destroyed. The subject of an Australian recall requiring a revised PCM calibration.

If you find it: Confirm the PCM recalibration recall was completed via VIN; have it done free at a Mazda dealer if outstanding.

mediumFuel-pump impeller failure (2017-2019 recall)

Look for: A defective low-pressure fuel-pump impeller can crack and swell, causing rough running, stalling or a no-start. Part of a large Mazda recall covering ~90,000 Australian vehicles including the CX-3.

If you find it: Check the fuel-pump recall is complete; replace the in-tank pump if symptomatic and not covered.

1.5L SkyActiv-D turbo-diesel

highEngine over-run / 'self-destruct' recall (diesel)

Look for: Australian CX-3 diesels were recalled because residual oil in the intake could be drawn into the engine, causing uncontrolled high-RPM run-away until the engine failed - widely reported as the 'self-destructing engine' recall.

If you find it: Confirm the recall (PCM/intake rectification) was completed via VIN before purchase; have any outstanding recall done at a Mazda dealer.

highDPF clogging, EGR and intake/swirl-valve carbon coking

Look for: Short urban trips stop the DPF completing regeneration, leading to blockages, forced regens and heavy soot coking of the EGR, intake and swirl valves - causing rough running, lost power and limp mode, a signature SkyActiv-D problem.

If you find it: Regular 20-30 min highway runs to allow regen; clean EGR/intake; budget for a DPF on a neglected town car.

mediumOil dilution / rising oil level (DPF regen)

Look for: Post-injection during DPF regen washes diesel past the rings into the sump; on short trips the regen never completes, oil level rises and thins, accelerating wear. Common to the SkyActiv-D family on city-only use.

If you find it: Do regular highway runs; change oil early and monitor the level; avoid for short-trip-only duty.

lowMZD Connect infotainment glitches

Look for: The MZD Connect head unit can freeze, reboot, drop Bluetooth, fail to connect Android Auto / Apple CarPlay, or show a faded/mottled screen; some units need replacement.

If you find it: Software/firmware update first; replace the display or head unit if hardware-faulty.

lowThin paint / dark-colour chipping

Look for: Paint is thin and chips easily, particularly on dark colours and the popular Soul Red; stone chips on the bonnet and front bumper are common.

If you find it: Paint protection film up front; touch-up or respray affected panels.

lowTight rear seat / small boot and headlight condensation

Look for: Practical niggles rather than faults: a cramped rear seat and small boot for the class, plus reports of headlight condensation appearing after the warranty period.

If you find it: Headlight condensation can sometimes be cleared by reseating/drying the unit or replacing the seal; the packaging limits are inherent to the car.

lowDirect-injection intake-valve carbon

Look for: Like most direct-injection petrols the SkyActiv-G can build carbon on the intake valves over time (no port-injection wash), causing rough idle or minor misfire at high km.

If you find it: Walnut-blast / intake clean if symptomatic; quality fuel and regular oil changes slow it.
