Overview

The FD (chassis code FD3S) is the third and final RX-7, and arguably the purest expression of Mazda's rotary dream: a low, light, 50:50 two-seat coupe powered exclusively by the 13B-REW - the world's first mass-produced sequential twin-turbo engine. Every FD ever built used this one 1.3L twin-rotor; there is no other engine, so the 'variants' here are the series/spec levels Australians actually buy. Australia got the Series 6 officially from 1992 (around 176kW, five-speed manual only, no auto was ever sold here), the legendary Series 6 RX-7 SP homologation special in 1995 (just 35 built, ~204kW/357Nm, lightweight, for the Bathurst 12 Hour which Mazda won), and the facelifted Series 7 from 1996 to 1998 before Mazda withdrew the car from the local market. The Series 8 (1998-2002) was never sold new here but is extremely common as a Japanese grey import, which is why it falls inside the 1992-2002 span. These are now appreciating modern classics and prices are strong - but the rotary is fragile and unforgiving: apex seals, the notorious 'rat's nest' of vacuum lines controlling the sequential turbos, chronic underbonnet heat and a stock cooling system that struggles all mean a neglected FD can need a full engine rebuild ($12k-25k+) without warning. Buy on compression test and documented rebuild history, not on looks.

Apex seal failure / loss of compression
The rotary's apex seals wear or break, usually from oil starvation, detonation/pre-ignition or overheating. Symptoms are hard cold starting, rough idle, blue smoke and a failed/uneven compression test. A worn rotary cannot be 'patched' - it needs a full engine rebuild.
Fix: Compression test before every purchase. Rebuild with quality (often 3mm) apex seals by a rotary specialist; maintain oil level, use premix or a working oil-metering system, never lug or overheat the engine.

Sequential turbo 'rat's nest' vacuum/solenoid failure
The sequential twin-turbo system is controlled by 8+ vacuum solenoids and a maze of small hoses that harden, crack and leak with underbonnet heat. Leaks cause poor secondary turbo transition, boost spikes, flutter, flat spots or limp running - and dangerous overboost can hurt the engine.
Fix: Full vacuum hose ('rat's nest') replacement with silicone lines, test/replace solenoids, verify charge-control and pre-control actuators. Many owners simplify to a single-turbo conversion.

Overheating - marginal stock cooling
The stock radiator and cooling are barely adequate; cracked radiators, warped/perished turbo coolant hoses, a failing expansion tank or a tired thermostat let temps climb. A rotary that overheats can lose its coolant (corner) seals and apex seals.
Fix: Fit a high-capacity alloy radiator, fresh hoses, new thermostat and good fan/shroud; never run a hot rotary hard. Watch the gauge religiously.

Chronic underbonnet heat soak
The FD packs a hot turbocharged rotary into a tiny, tightly sealed engine bay. Heat cooks the vacuum hoses, wiring, coolant hoses and the radiator, and is the root cause behind many FD failures - including coolant seal and apex seal damage.
Fix: Upgrade radiator/cooling, replace heat-perished hoses and lines, fit heat shielding/venting; never shut a heat-soaked engine down hard after a hard run.

High oil consumption is normal - low oil is fatal
Rotaries deliberately inject a small amount of oil into the combustion process to lubricate the seals, so they always use oil. Owners who do not top up - or who delete the oil-metering system without proper premix - starve the seals and destroy the engine.
