highChronic underbonnet heat soak

Look for: The FD packs a hot turbocharged rotary into a tiny, tightly sealed engine bay. Heat cooks the vacuum hoses, wiring, coolant hoses and the radiator, and is the root cause behind many FD failures - including coolant seal and apex seal damage.

If you find it: Upgrade radiator/cooling, replace heat-perished hoses and lines, fit heat shielding/venting; never shut a heat-soaked engine down hard after a hard run.

highHigh oil consumption is normal - low oil is fatal

Look for: Rotaries deliberately inject a small amount of oil into the combustion process to lubricate the seals, so they always use oil. Owners who do not top up - or who delete the oil-metering system without proper premix - starve the seals and destroy the engine.

If you find it: Check oil every fuel stop, keep it topped up, use the correct oil, and never run an OMP-deleted car without disciplined premix.

Look for: FDs are heavily modified by the tuner scene; over-boosted, poorly tuned or single-turbo-converted cars can have stressed or already-damaged engines and dubious workmanship.

Look for: A warm rotary shut down and restarted briefly can flood and refuse to fire, fouling the spark plugs - a classic rotary trait that worsens as compression drops.

If you find it: Follow correct hot-start procedure, fit fresh quality plugs, and treat persistent flooding (with low compression) as a warning of a tired engine.

Look for: The high-revving turbo drivetrain and spirited use wear clutches, and the LSD and rear diff can whine or wear, especially on modified or track-used cars.

Look for: Now 25-30+ years old, FDs can show rust in sills, floors and around seals, plus brittle interior plastics, peeling switch coatings and aging electrics.

highApex seal failure / loss of compression

Look for: The rotary's apex seals wear or break, usually from oil starvation, detonation/pre-ignition or overheating. Symptoms are hard cold starting, rough idle, blue smoke and a failed/uneven compression test. A worn rotary cannot be 'patched' - it needs a full engine rebuild.

If you find it: Compression test before every purchase. Rebuild with quality (often 3mm) apex seals by a rotary specialist; maintain oil level, use premix or a working oil-metering system, never lug or overheat the engine.

highSequential turbo 'rat's nest' vacuum/solenoid failure

Look for: The sequential twin-turbo system is controlled by 8+ vacuum solenoids and a maze of small hoses that harden, crack and leak with underbonnet heat. Leaks cause poor secondary turbo transition, boost spikes, flutter, flat spots or limp running - and dangerous overboost can hurt the engine.

If you find it: Full vacuum hose ('rat's nest') replacement with silicone lines, test/replace solenoids, verify charge-control and pre-control actuators. Many owners simplify to a single-turbo conversion.

highOverheating - marginal stock cooling

Look for: The stock radiator and cooling are barely adequate; cracked radiators, warped/perished turbo coolant hoses, a failing expansion tank or a tired thermostat let temps climb. A rotary that overheats can lose its coolant (corner) seals and apex seals.

If you find it: Fit a high-capacity alloy radiator, fresh hoses, new thermostat and good fan/shroud; never run a hot rotary hard. Watch the gauge religiously.

RX-7 SP (Bathurst homologation, 1995)

highApex seal / rotor wear (often track-stressed)

Look for: As with any 13B-REW, the apex and corner seals wear and the engine eventually needs a rebuild; SP cars were built to be raced, so many have had a harder life than standard road FDs.

If you find it: Demand compression figures and documented rebuild/race history; budget for a specialist rotary rebuild.

mediumProvenance / authenticity risk

Look for: With only 35 built and high values, mis-described 'SP-spec' or replica/converted cars exist. Buying the wrong car is a five-figure mistake.

highVacuum/solenoid 'rat's nest' degradation

Look for: The sequential-turbo control hoses and solenoids harden and leak, upsetting the primary-to-secondary turbo transition and boost control.

If you find it: Replace the full vacuum system with silicone lines and test all solenoids; some owners convert to single turbo.
