Overview

The RX-8 (chassis SE3P) was Mazda's last rotary sports car, sold in Australia from 2003 to 2012 across a Series I (2003-2008) and a facelifted Series II (2008-2012). Power comes from the naturally aspirated 1.3L 13B-MSP 'Renesis' twin-rotor Wankel - a genuinely unique, free-revving (9000rpm) engine with near-50:50 weight distribution, a low bonnet line and rear-hinged 'freestyle' rear doors. Australia got two distinct states of tune tied to the gearbox: the high-power 6-port engine with the 6-speed manual (177kW Series I, 170kW Series II), and a lower-output engine paired with the automatic (4-speed/141kW in Series I, a far better 6-port 6-speed Activematic/158kW in Series II). The driving experience is superb, but ownership is defined by the rotary's frailties - apex seal wear and lost compression (often by 100,000-150,000km), hot-start flooding, weak Series I starter motors, heavy oil and fuel consumption (it BURNS oil by design - you must top it up), tired ignition coils and clogged cats. Buy one only with eyes open, a compression test in hand, and a rotary specialist on speed-dial; a healthy, well-maintained example is a joy, a neglected one is a money pit.

Apex seal wear / loss of compression
The Renesis's apex seals wear and the rotor faces lose compression, giving hard hot-starting, rough idle, sluggish acceleration and eventual no-start. Many engines need a rebuild between 100,000 and 150,000km; a poorly maintained one can fail well earlier.
Fix: Compression test (rotary tester, not a piston gauge) before buying; full engine rebuild with new seals by a rotary specialist (e.g. Mazfix/RotorMaster). Regular oil top-ups, premium fuel, warm-up discipline and frequent oil changes prolong seal life.

Hot-start flooding
Shutting the engine down before it reaches operating temperature dumps unburnt fuel into the chambers and floods it, leaving the car hard or impossible to restart and hammering the starter. A classic, well-documented RX-8 trait.
Fix: Always let it reach temperature before shutting off; clear a flood via the de-flood/WOT crank procedure or by pulling plugs. Healthy ignition (coils/plugs) and a strong battery reduce the risk.

Rotaries are hard on ignition. Tired coils, plugs and leads cause misfires, poor starting, lost power and - if left - extra fuel burning out the catalytic converter.

Pros

Apex seal wear / loss of compression
Like all Renesis engines, the auto loses compression as apex seals wear, producing hard hot-starts, rough running and eventual failure - typically 100,000-150,000km, earlier if oil top-ups and warm-ups were neglected.
Fix: Rotary-specific compression test pre-purchase; rebuild with new seals by a rotary specialist. Diligent oil top-ups, premium fuel and frequent oil changes are essential.

The Renesis deliberately injects engine oil into the combustion chambers to lubricate the rotor seals, so it genuinely consumes oil between services. Owners who don't check and top up the oil starve the seals and dramatically shorten engine life - the single biggest cause of premature failure.
Fix: Check oil every 1000-2000km and top up; use quality oil and short oil-change intervals. Some owners add a premix or upgrade the oil metering. Treat oil level as a constant duty, not a service-only item.
