Outlander
Overview
The third-generation Outlander is a soft-roader car-based crossover, not a serious 4WD - the AWD versions use an electronic on-demand coupling on a FWD platform rather than a low-range transfer case. Sold across three facelifts in Australia: ZJ (2012-2014), the 'Dynamic Shield' ZK (2015-2018) and the refreshed ZL (2019-2021), in ES/LS/XLS/Aspire/Exceed grades with five or seven seats. Australia got four powertrains: a 2.0L petrol (FWD, the only one offered with a manual), a 2.4L petrol (the volume seller, FWD or AWD), a 2.2L turbo-diesel (AWD, conventional 6-speed auto), and the 2.0L plug-in hybrid PHEV (twin-motor S-AWC, the standout of the range). The big buyer caveat is the CVT (Jatco) fitted to both petrol engines - shudder, hesitation and overheating are well documented and were the subject of a North American class action; the diesel's torque-converter auto sidesteps that but brings DPF/EGR and oil-dilution complexity. The PHEV is mechanically the most interesting and avoids the CVT entirely, but main-battery degradation and the cost of a high-voltage pack out of warranty are the things to watch. Cheap to buy, cheap to run as a 2.4 petrol, but it is a school-run SUV - judge it as one.

Pros
- Cheapest way into a 3rd-gen Outlander
- Chain timing - no belt to replace
- Manual available (ES) avoids the CVT entirely
- Light and economical around town
Cons
- Underpowered for a 5-7 seat SUV, especially loaded or on hills
- CVT auto versions share the family shudder/hesitation issues
- FWD only - no AWD on the 2.0
- Modest 1600kg tow rating

Pros
- The volume engine - easiest to find with full history
- Adequately brisk and smooth, chain-driven
- FWD or AWD, five or seven seats
- Cheap to buy and to run for a family SUV

- CVT-only - same shudder/hesitation risk as the 2.0
- AWD is a soft-roader coupling, not a real off-road system
- Some early oil-consumption reports
- Tow rating only 1600kg

2.2L 4N14 DI-D turbo diesel
Pros
- Conventional 6-speed torque-converter auto - no CVT
- Best torque and economy of the range, best for towing (2000kg)
- Standard AWD
- Strong, relaxed long-distance tourer
Cons
- DPF dislikes short urban-only trips - regen problems and clogging
- Oil dilution during regens raises the level - a known 4N14 issue
- EGR valve sticking is the classic loss-of-power cause
- 40,000km valve-clearance check disturbs injectors and is labour-heavy
Known problems
2.0L PHEV plug-in hybrid
Pros
- No CVT - uses a clutched fixed-ratio/EV drive, sidestepping the petrol cars' big weakness
- Genuine ~40-50km EV-only range for commuting
- Quiet, strong electric AWD via S-AWC
- Pajero-style off-tarmac traction better than the soft-roader petrols
Cons
- Drive-battery capacity fades with age; real EV range can drop well below the original claim
- High-voltage pack replacement is very expensive out of warranty
- Thirsty once the battery is depleted and run as a heavy petrol
- No third-row seat option; complex system needs hybrid-literate servicing
