Overview

Sold as Ti and Ti-L, the Y62 is a luxury full-size 4WD wagon and a complete departure from the agricultural Y61 it sold alongside. Australia got only the 5.6L VK56VD petrol V8 - 298kW/560Nm, 90% of torque from 1600rpm - paired with a 7-speed auto and full-time ALL-MODE 4WD with a lockable rear diff. Higher grades use HBMC (Hydraulic Body Motion Control) instead of anti-roll bars for a remarkable on/off-road ride. Enormously capable and superb value used; the catch is no factory diesel and a serious appetite for premium fuel.

Pros

  • Huge, effortless V8 - genuinely quick for the size
  • Full-time 4WD with lockable rear diff, very capable
  • HBMC gives excellent ride on and off road
  • Tremendous value used vs price-when-new

Cons

  • Requires 95-98 premium - and drinks it (16-22 L/100km real)
  • No factory diesel option in Australia
  • Sensitive to fuel quality - bad fuel can damage catalysts
  • Heavy on brakes and tyres

Known problems

medium
Fuel quality sensitivity / catalyst damage
The VK56 needs 95-98 octane; poor or incorrect fuel can cause running issues and, over time, damage the catalytic converters.
Fix: Only use quality 95-98 fuel; address misfires/running issues promptly before cats are harmed.

medium
HBMC hydraulic system leaks
The Hydraulic Body Motion Control system (higher grades) can develop leaks at its rams/lines, degrading roll control and ride.
Fix: Inspect and reseal/replace leaking HBMC components; check pre-purchase on Ti-L.

medium
Timing chain noise (early build years)
Some earlier-year V8s have reported timing chain/tensioner noise that, if ignored, risks engine damage.
Fix: Investigate any cold-start chain rattle early; tensioner/chain service if confirmed.

low
Traction control / wheel-speed sensor faults (2013-2015)
Early cars can throw traction-control/ABS faults from a failing wheel-speed sensor or control module.
Fix: Diagnose and replace the faulty sensor; software updates where applicable.

Common problems (all variants)

low
Brake and tyre wear (heavy vehicle)
At ~2900kg the Y62 wears brakes and tyres quickly, more so towing or in the city.
Fix: Quality pads/rotors; rotate tyres; towing-spec pads if towing.
From 40k+ km · ~$400-1200
low
Differential / driveline wear (heavy towing/off-road)
Frequent heavy towing or off-road use can wear diffs and driveline components.
Fix: Regular diff oil changes; inspect driveline on hard-worked examples.
From 120k+ km · ~$500-2000
low
Infotainment / electronics age
Early infotainment and electronic modules feel dated and can develop glitches.
Fix: Software updates; module repair/replacement as needed.
